Boro Wraps Up 2010 with 87-80 win over Fairmont State

Fairmont, WV. (Dec. 31, 2010) –The Edinboro University women's basketball team concluded the 2010 portion of their season with an 87-80 win over Fairmont State at the New Year's Classic hosted by the Falcons. Edinboro improves to 6-1 which is the best start since the 2000-01 team started 8-1 while Fairmont State drops to 7-3. Renee' Brown led five Boro scorers in double figures with 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting and hit both her three point attempts as well as all four shots from the free throw line. Darche' Jackson had a double-double with 14 points and ten boards all in the second half.

            The Falcons jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and would lead by as many as 13 points in the opening half. A layup by Kaitlin Snyder gave Fairmont State a 30-18 advantage with 7:58 to go but the Fighting Scots would score the next ten points to cut the lead to two. Renee' Brown started the rally with back to back three pointers sandwiched between a steal by Raven Metz. Samantha Blazetic would covert two free throws off an offensive rebound and two free throws by Renee' Brown would make the score 30-28 in favor of the Falcons with 5:04 to go.

            The final five minutes would feature three ties and Edinboro's Laurel Lindsay would give the Fighting Scots their first lead of the game when the freshman guard hit two free throws with :14 to go to set the halftime score at 40-39. Brown scored 12 of her 20 in the opening half. Blazetic chipped in eight points in the first 20:00 and finished the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

            The second half featured four ties and 10 lead changes before the Fighting Scots took control down the stretch. Two free throws by Rachel Murray gave Fairmont State a 63-61 advantage with 8:35 to go before an 18-7 run by Edinboro would give the Scots their biggest lead of the contest. Jackson capped off the run with three offensive rebounds before finally getting the put back to give Edinboro a 79-70 lead with 3:09 to go. Murray would respond with a jumper for the Falcons to cut the lead to seven but Jackson would grab two offensive rebounds and get another follow up to put the lead back to nine with 2:35 to go.

            Edinboro would close out the game going 6 of 7 from the line over the final 1:47. Micki Cerchiaro would hit four straight over the final  :16 seconds to ensure victory. Cerchiaro finished the game with 12 points (ten in the second half) and eight rebounds. The Fighting Scots held a 39-27 rebounding advantage to stop the hot shooting of the host Falcons. Fairmont State finished the game hitting 28 of their 53 field goal attempts for 52.8% and hit on eight of their 17 three pointers (47.1%).  The Fighting Scot bench really made a difference with a 49-6 edge in reserve scoring.

            Kiara Brown finished the game with 14 points as the California (Pa.) transfer has scored in double figures in four of her first six games at Edinboro.

            The Fighting Scots kick off PSAC Crossover action on Monday night with a 5:30 p.m. tip against Shippensburg.
