Edinboro Defeats Cal in Three Sets to Move Into PSAC Semifinals

EDINBORO, Pa. (November 17, 2015) – Making their first appearance in the PSAC Tournament since 2010, the Edinboro University volleyball team defeated California(Pa.) in three games by scores of 25-10, 26-24, and 25-17 in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Fighting Scots advance to the PSAC Final Four for the first time since 2010.

The Fighting Scots, the number one seed in the Western Division, improved to 31-5, the most wins since the 1990 won 31 contests. The fourth-seeded Vulcans dropped to 16-17. Edinboro now moves on to face Shippensburg in the semifinals on Friday at Pitt-Johnstown. The second seed out of the Eastern Division, the Raiders moved on with a five-game win over West Chester.

Cal had defeated Edinboro in five games on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.  The Fighting Scots jumped out to an impressive start, as Victoria Severo had seven kills in the first set, with Edinboro hitting at a .394 percentage. Leading 8-4, the Fighting Scots ran off five straight points, two coming on Severo kills. Cal would never pull closer than eight points the rest of the way, with Edinboro closing out the game with the final six points.

The Fighting Scots jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the second set, but the Vulcans would take their first lead of the night at 17-16. They would build the margin to 22-18 and were at game point at 24-21 when Edinboro mounted a comeback.

Edinboro would score the final five points to win 26-24. Challen Litwiler got the rally started with a kill. Three Cal hitting errors gave Edinboro the lead at 25-24, and Litwiler completed the comeback with a kill.

The third set also was close after Edinboro jumped out to a 6-1 lead thanks to three straight Litwiler service aces and a pair of Latoya Hutchinson kills. Cal was never able to gain the lead, but would close to 16-15 before Edinboro closed out the match with a 9-2 run.

Edinboro scored six straight points to gain control of the final game. Litwiler had a pair of kills in that stretch, with Hannah Cantrill contributing a service ace. Cal scored back-to-back points to make it 22-17, with the Scots responded with a Severo kill, followed by back-to-back service aces by Severo to close out the win and send Edinboro to the semifinals.
