Brown's Goal Propels Scots to PSAC Semifinals with 1-0 Win over Kutztown

EDINBORO, Pa. (nov. 3, 2015) – After singing the national anthem prior to the PSAC quarterfinal match, Alex Brown propelled Edinboro into the semifinals on Tuesday afternoon with the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Kutztown at Sox Harrison Stadium. The victory boosted fourth-seeded Edinboro to 13-6-0, further enhancing the Fighting Scots' NCAA playoff hopes. Kutztown, the fifth seed, fell to 11-6-1.

Edinboro now moves on to the PSAC Final Four, where coach Gary Kagiavas' team will face top-ranked and number one seed Gannon on Friday, November 6. The Lady Knights earned the right to host the PSAC Final Four with a 3-1 win over Bloomsburg. The other semifinal will feature #7 seed East Stroudsburg, a 1-0 double overtime winner over #2 West Chester, against #3 seed Slippery Rock, who also won 1-0 in double overtime over #6 seed Shippensburg.

Just over two weeks ago, Edinboro and Kutztown met on a snowy afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium, with the Fighting Scots prevailing 4-1. This time around the players were bathed in sunshine and 70 degree temperatures.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, with Edinboro outshooting the Golden Bears, 6-2. Edinboro had the best opportunity to score, but Ashley Mutkus' shot hit the crossbar in the 26th minute.

Both teams had early chances in the second half, including a sprawling save by Edinboro goalkeeper Sarah Baskey on a long shot by Diana Malanga in the 65th minute. A minute later Kutztown's Alaina Curry just missed to the right side on a long shot that went wide.

Edinboro finally put a crooked number on the board at the 66:38 mark. Brown, a junior, blasted a shot past Deanna Messner from 25 yards out into the top left corner to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead. It was Brown's fifth goal of the season.

The Edinboro defense did the rest, as they held Kutztown off the board to come away with their sixth shutout of the season. Baskey, a sophomore, improved to 11-4-0 with her fifth shutout, recording four saves.

Edinboro held a 14-7 advantage in shots. Messner came up with six saves.

The Fighting Scots are making their sixth straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament and will play in the PSAC semifinals for the first time since 2012. Edinboro has never played in the PSAC championship game. Gannon defeated Edinboro, 4-0, earlier this year.
