Hutchinson, Severo Finish with 15 Kills but Edinboro Falls to IUP in PSAC Quarterfinals

EDINBORO, Pa. – Latoya Hutchinson and Victoria Severo finished with 15 kill for the Edinboro women's volleyball team, but it wasn't enough to hold off an upset-minded Indiana(Pa.) team on Tuesday night in a PSAC Quarterfinal match. The second-seeded Fighting Scots lost 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 24-26, 20-25) to the Crimson Hawks, the seventh seed, at McComb Fieldhouse. IUP (20-10) moves on to face third-seeded Pitt-Johnstown in the PSAC Final Four on Friday at Gannon, while Edinboro (23-8) must now await word on a possible NCAA Division II Tournament berth. The Fighting Scots were ranked second in the latest Atlantic Region rankings.

The contest was incredibly close throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points until the fourth game. The Fighting Scots, however, had no answer for the powerful hitting of Natalie Cignetti, the daughter of IUP football coach Curt Cignetti. The junior outside hitter finished with 24 kills and a .404 hitting percentage.

Edinboro won the first game, 25-22, pulling ahead for good after being tied 17-17. The Scots ran off the next three points on a pair of kills by Hutchinson and one by Litwiler to go up 20-17. IUP pulled to within 21-20, but Megan Screptock's kill halted the rally.

Edinboro had set points in both the second and third games but could not close out the Crimson Hawks. In the second game, the Scots led 23-21 and 25-24 on Sydney Trathen's kill, but IUP would score the final three points after trailing 25-24. The third game saw Edinboro hold a 24-22 lead after a Severo kill, but IUP ran off the final four points.

IUP would open up the biggest lead of the night in the fourth game at 20-12, but the Fighting Scots staged a spirited comeback. They would close the gap to 21-18 when Severo and Trathen came up with a block at the net. However, following an IUP timeout, the Crimson Hawks scored the next three points, the last on an service ace by Cignetti, and closed out the match on a kill by Lily McWilliams after kills by Severo and Hutchinson had pulled the Scots to within 24-20.

Screptock was also in double figures with 12 kills, and also led the Scots with 20 digs. Trathen had 52 assists, while Jordan Van Oss and Litwiler totaled 14 digs apiece, and Taylor Palowski had 12. Litwiler moves into eighth place in career digs with 1,239.
