Michelle Jahn's career-high 28 points, the Edinboro University women's basketball team was able to rebound from a slow-start and put up a season-high 49 second half points as the Fighting Scots defeated Pitt-Johnstown for the second time this season, 79-75. With the win, Edinboro improves to 17-8 overall and more importantly, clinch a seventh straight PSAC Playoff appearance with a 12-7 mark in the PSAC West. The Lady Cats fall to 7-17 on the year and are now 4-14 in the PSAC West.
Whitney Allen recorded her first career double-doublePitt-Johnstown opened the contest with a 20-5 run as the Fighting Scots were 2-of-8 from the field and turned the ball over five times in the opening eight minutes of play. Edinboro was able to cut the deficit to just eight points at 22-14, ending the quarter on a 9-2 run.
The Fighting Scots continued to chip away at the lead, cutting it to just two points with 2:42 remaining in the first half before back-to-back 3-pointers by the Lady Cats built the lead back to eight points at 34-26. Edinboro entered the locker room trailing by six points at 36-30.
Pitt-Johnstown built its lead back to double-figures midway through the third quarter, leading by 12 points with 5:23 remaining in the period. After being held scoreless for the entire first half,
Katie Fischer her first basket with 4:34 remaining as Edinboro battled back, closing out the third quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit tojust three points at 58-55.
Edinboro took the lead at 61-60 just over a minute into the final quarter on a
Aignee' Freeland converted an and-1 with 8:37 remaining to play. Pitt-Johnstown grabbed the lead right back on the ensuing possession with an Ana Hollen jumper. Trailing by four points at 69-65 with 3:54 remaining, Edinboro sparked a 14-6 run to regain the lead and earn the victory.
Katie Fischer scored 13 second half pointsThe run was sparked by a Fischer steal and finish on the other end. Fischer also converted an and-1 down the stretch as the junior put the Fighting Scots up for good at 76-73 with 27 seconds remaining.
Edinboro finished 40.3 percent (27-of-67) from the field and 5-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots held a slim 43-42 advantage on the glass and converted 14 Pitt-Johnstown turnovers into 24 points. The Lady Cats shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field and 6-of-23 from three.
Jahn's career-high 28 points were followed by Freeland with 16 points. Freeland moved into sixth on the all-time scoring list with 1,474 career-points. She also blocked four shots, moving her season total to 49, the 12
th most in single-season history.
Fischer finished with 13 points, all in the second half.
Whitney Allen finished with her first career double-double, totaling 10 points and 10 boards. Allen also dished out a team-high five assists.
Jasmine Harper led the Lady Cats with 16 points off the bench.
