Fighting Scots Celebrate Senior Day with 80-67 Win Over Seton Hill

Edinboro, Pa. (February 20, 2016) - The Edinboro women's basketball team used a quick start for an enjoyable finish on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots claimed an 80-67 win over Seton Hill at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro has now won 10 of its last 12 games to improve to 19-8 overall and 14-7 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill, still in the chase for the final PSAC West playoff berth, fell to 13-14 and 9-12, respectively.

Aignee' Freeland finished with 22 points
Seniors Aignee' Freeland and Lauren Hippo were honored prior to the game, and both played a key role in the fast start that saw Edinboro grab a 21-4 lead after six minutes. Katie Fischer started the game with a layup and Hippo followed with a 3-pointer for a 5-0 lead.

After a Seton Hill basket, the Fighting Scots ran off the next seven points on a pair of Freeland layups and another Hippo trifecta for a 1-2 lead. A Griffins' hoop made it 12-4, but Edinboro answered with the next nine points. Freeland and Hippo each scored six points in the fast start.

Edinboro would maintain the double-digit lead for much of the game, leading 26-10 after one period, 45-31 at the half, and 62-44 after three periods. The Griffins would make things interesting in the fourth quarter, however. Trailing by 19 points early in the period, they would pull to within six points at 71-65 with 2:15 to play following a three-point play by Chrisanna Green. That capped a 9-2 run over the previous two minutes.

The Fighting Scots answered with their won 9-2 run to end the game. Freeland scored on a jumper in the paint, and Fischer followed with a pair of free throws for a 75-65 lead at the 1:26 mark. Alexandra Hay would score on a layup for Seton Hill, but that would be their last points. Freeland's layup off a feed from Michelle Jahn was followed by two Jahn free throws, and Whitney Allen capped the win by making one-of-two free throws.

While scoring 80 points against a Seton Hill team that was allowing just 62.3 ppg., third in the PSAC, the Fighting Scots shot 42.6 percent from the floor (29-of-68), and 17-of-20 free throws. Seton Hill, meanwhile, shot 40.9 percent from the floor (27-of-66) and was 8-for-15 at the line. Edinboro dominated on the glass, 47-34, including 17 offensive rebounds. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.

Katie Fischer totaled 19 points, nine assists and six steals


Freeland led three players in double figures, as the 6'3" forward finished with 22 points, making 11-of-16 shots from the floor. She added seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. Fisher added 19 points, nine assists, and six steals.  Jahn had 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Allen fell a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, along with five assists. Hippo had eight points and five rebounds. Freeland now has 1,514 career points and Hippo 1,061.

Jenna Kaufman led four players in double figures for Seton Hill, totaling 22 points. Jharrin Gill added 12 points, with Green contributing 11 points and seven rebounds and Hay 10 points.

Edinboro wraps up the regular season on Wednesday, February 24 at PSAC West-leading California(Pa.). the Fighting Scots will then host a first round playoff game on Saturday, February 27.
