Fighting Scots Use Big Second Half to Ground Golden Eagles, 68-51, in Clarion

CLARION, Pa. (January 18, 2017) – For the second straight outing, the first place Edinboro University women's basketball team used a big second half surge to down their opponent, this time handing Clarion a 68-51 defeat inside the Tippin Gymnasium on Wednesday night. With the win, the Fighting Scots pushed their win streak to 16 games and improved to 16-2 overall and a perfect 12-0 in PSAC play. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Clarion and the Golden Eagles fell to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in conference action.
 
The first 20 minutes of Wednesday's contest was a sequence of runs. The Fighting Scots opened the game on an 11-0 run before Clarion answered back with a 17-1 run. Edinboro again responded with 10-0 run and the two teams traded buckets as the contest was gridlocked at 31-31 at half.

The Fighting Scots asserted themselves early and often to begin the second half, opening the third quarter on a 17-4 run to take a double digit lead at 48-35 with just under three minutes remaining in the period. The run was highlighted by a trio of 3-pointers, two from sophomore Michelle Jahn and one from senior Katie Fischer.
 
The Golden Eagles missed 11 of their first 13 shots in the second half and turned the ball over four times in the first eight minutes of the third quarter after doing so just six times the entire first half.
 
The Edinboro lead grew to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Fighting Scots used an 11-0 run late in the third into the fourth quarter to build a comfortable lead. Freshman Michaela Barnes dropped in six of the 11 Edinboro points during the stretch.
 
Jahn led a trio of Fighting Scots in double figures, scoring a game-high 19 points. She also pulled down five rebounds and picked up a pair of steals. Barnes added 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting and also grabbed five boards. Fischer totaled 14 points and dished out five assists, her seventh straight game with at least five assists. Senior Nicole Johnson recorded a season-high 12 rebounds to go along with her six points.
 
Edinboro finished the contest shooting 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field and narrowly won the rebound battle, 48-47. The Golden Eagles were held to just 27.0 percent (17-of-63) shooting from the floor and turned the ball over 15 times.
 
For the ninth time in the past 11 outings, the Fighting Scots held their opponent to under 60 points. Clarion entered Wednesday's contest ranked second in the PSAC in scoring offense at 74.5 ppg and the 51 points was the lowest output all season for the Golden Eagles.
 
The Fighting Scots were also able to neutralize the long-range game of the Golden Eagles. Clarion is ranked eighth in Division II in 3-pointers (166) and lead the PSAC in 3-pt. percentage at 35.9 percent. The Edinboro defense held the Golden Eagles to a season-low 3-of-19 from beyond the arc.

Tyra Polite was the lone Golden Eagle to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points on a season-low 5-of-20 shooting, including making just 1-of-5 3-pointers. Polite ranks fourth in the nation 3-pointers (54) and 15th in 3-pt. percentage (35.8). Jordan Bekelja and Delrika Jones-Carey both added nine points apiece. Jones-Carey also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
 
The Fighting Scots conclude this three-game road trip on Saturday, January 21 at Slippery Rock. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
