Fighting Scots Hold Off Late Griffin Rally to Win 11th Straight Game, 58-54

GREENSBURG, Pa. (January 3, 2017) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team led from horn-to-horn, but needed to hold off a late Seton Hill rally to secure their 11th consecutive victory, 58-54. With the win, the Fighting Scots improved to 11-2 overall and stayed a perfect 7-0 in the PSAC West while the Griffins dropped to 8-5 and 4-3, respectively. Edinboro has won all 15 meetings against the Griffins dating back to the 1990-91. This is the first meeting between the two teams that wasn't decided by double figures.
 
The Fighting Scots opened Tuesday night's contest on a 9-3 run and took a 18-12 lead after the conclusion of the opening quarter. Edinboro outscored the Griffins 11-5 in the second quarter to take a 29-17 halftime lead. Seton Hill was just 2-of-6 from the floor in the quarter and turned the ball over eight times.

The Edinboro lead grew to as many as 19 points in the third quarter and the Fighting Scots held a 47-33 advantage at the start of the final stanza. The Griffins opened up the fourth quarter with a pair of Lindsey Mifsud free throws to cut the Edinboro lead to 12 before a layup by Katie Fischer and 3-pointer by Michelle Jahn grew the Fighting Scots lead back to 17 at 52-35 with just over seven minutes remaining.
 
The Griffins scored the next 12 points to cut the deficit to 52-47 with 1:36 remaining. A Fischer jumper halted the scoreless stretch and gave Edinboro a seven-point lead with a minute remaining. Following a Jontay Walton free throw, Seton Hill's Chrisanna Green scored four straight points to cut the lead to 55-51 with 20 seconds remaining, but free throws from Jahn and Walton iced the game for the Fighting Scots.
 
Jahn and Fischer led the Fighting Scots with 12 points apiece. Both guards also grabbed four rebounds. Fischer dished out five assists and picked up three steals. Michaela Barnes finished with 11 points. Jontay Walton added seven points and three assists off the bench.
 
Ciara Rosten led a trio of Fighting Scots with seven boards. Rosten also added six points, breaking her string of seven straight games in double digits scoring. Nicole Johnson also grabbed seven rebounds to go along with four points. Cheniya Sharpe came off the bench to finish with seven boards and three steals.
 
For the fifth time in the last six outings the Edinboro defense held an opponent to under 60 points. The Fighting Scots forced Seton Hill into 21 turnovers which they cashed in for 12 points.
 
Edinboro finished the contest shooting 34.9 percent (22-of-63) and 3-of-16 from beyond the arc, while the Griffins shot a similar 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the floor, including 4-of-18 3-pointers.
 
Seton Hill's Green finished as the only Griffin to score in double figures. The forward finished with a double-double of 17 points and 16 boards. Green also dished out a team-high four assists. Misfud finished with nine points while Seton Hill's leading scorer Jenna Kaufman was held to just five points on 2-of-10 shooting.
 
The Fighting Scots return to action on Friday, January 6, hosting Pitt-Johnstown at 5:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
