Pondel Captures Individual Crown as Edinboro Finishes Second at PSAC Men's Cross Country Championships

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Edinboro redshirt senior Austin Pondel was the individual champion at the 2017 PSAC Men's Cross Country Championships, helping the Fighting Scots capture second place in the meet. The race took place at George H. Roadman University Park and was hosted by California(Pa.).

Shippensburg won the team title for the second straight year, as the Red Raiders finished with 38 points, with four runners in the top eight finishers. Edinboro totaled 57 points to take home second place, with Indiana(Pa.) third with 91 points. A total of 16 teams and 172 runners competed in the event.

"This was a strong showing from our men's program across the board," noted second-year head coach Ryan Foster. "We had great runs out of our entire top seven capped off by (Austin) Pondel's individual victory. Particularly heartening was the performances from Steve Scheetz and Mikey McLaughlin at 6 and 7. We showed off our depth today, which will be an important factor as we make our push towards the national championship."

Pondel, a transfer from Penn State who ran as a prepster at nearby Corry High School, finished with a time of 26:27.9 over the 8K course. He won by 12 seconds over Shippensburg's Alexander Balla, who had a time of 26:39.4. He is Edinboro's first male individual champion since Scott Anderson in 2010.

Eugene Baritot, a redshirt junior, came in sixth for Edinboro with a time of 26:58.8. Junior Jared Hallow joined Pondel and Baritot as All-PSAC first team honorees with a 12th-place showing. He posted a time of 27:48.8. Baritot and Hallow both earned second team accolades last year.

Two other Boro harriers earned second team All-PSAC honors. Freshman Colton Cassel finished in 17th place with a time of 27:58.6, while Jonathan Gusew became a three-time All-PSAC honoree thanks to a 21st-place showing (28:04.9).

Three other Fighting Scots competed. Steven Scheetz just missed earning All-PSAC honors as the redshirt sophomore finished 31st (28:24.3). Senior Mike McLaughlin was 34th (28:31.3), and Eduardo Tapia, a redshirt junior, was 55th (29:04.5).

Next up for the Fighting Scots is the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, set for November 4 at Lock Haven.
