Fabulous Freshmen Capture PSAC Championship as Parsons Finishes Second

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – In the closest contest in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference history, the Edinboro women's cross country team edged defending champion Shippensburg to win the 2017 PSAC Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday morning. The race took place at George H. Roadman University Park and was hosted by California(Pa.). Edinboro won its PSAC-high 18th conference championship.

Edinboro finished with 87 points, with Shippensburg just two points behind with 89 points. Kutztown was a distant third with 126 points. A total of 18 teams and 172 runners competed in the race. Edinboro has now won three of the last four PSAC Championships, although the 2017 team had an entirely different look to it.

"We knew we had an opportunity to win a conference title but that it wouldn't come easy," related second-year head coach Ryan Foster." The women got out well, stayed patient through the middle, and then won the one-on-one match-ups at the end.

"Every lady contributed to winning this championship," he continued. "Through tough running and the ability to close hard they held off a very accomplished Shippensburg team. For a group of freshmen to be able to handle a championship environment says a lot about the tenacity and attitude within this group. It would be interesting to know if a team has won a conference title scoring five freshmen. Our coaching staff is incredibly proud of them."

The closest finish prior to today's race occurred in 2008, with Shippensburg defeating Slippery Rock by three points. Two other PSAC championships finished with a four-point difference.

California(Pa.)'s Julie Friend captured the individual crown, covering the 6K course in a time of 22:07 to win by almost a full minute. Stefanie Parsons of Edinboro was second, as the freshman posted a time of 23:04.5. She moved up from seventh place to second over the last mile.

Parsons is part of an outstanding group of freshmen who have paced head coach Ryan Foster's team all year. In fact, Edinboro's top five finishers were all freshmen. Parsons has been Edinboro's top finisher in each race this season. Hope Pietrocarlo, a redshirt freshman who transferred from Toledo, was next, coming in tenth with a time of 23:31.0, followed by freshman Brooke Messinger, who was 11th with a time of 23:35.1. All three earned All-PSAC first team honors.

"One moment that stands out is Brooke Messinger outsprinting Shippensburg's Lydia Cagle," Foster pointed out. "The 0.6 seconds that separated them at the finish was a two point swing that won Edinboro the meet."

Jasmine Fehr also garnered All-PSAC accolades, picking up second team honors thanks to a 30th place finish. The freshman had a time of 24:23.1. Freshman Tori Klimowicz was Edinboro's final scorer, capturing 34th place with a time of 24:32.

Junior Abbey Lang (37th – 24:39.8) and freshman Jordan Hauser (70th – 25:43.1) also competed for Edinboro.

Next up for the Fighting Scots is the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, set for November 4 at Lock Haven.
