EDINBORO, Pa. –
Jontay Walton scored 19 points and
Cheniya Sharpe pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds to lead Edinboro to an 82-50 win over Seton Hill in a PSAC Tournament First Round Game on Monday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting, the fourth seed, improved to 21-8 and will move on to play at top-seeded California(Pa.) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1 in a PSAC Quarterfinal contest. Seton Hill, the fifth seed, ends the year at 16-13.
Walton paced four players in double figures, and the redshirt sophomore guard joined Sharpe to provide energy to an Edinboro team that struggled down the stretch. The Fighting Scots had lost four of their last six games entering the postseason. Seton Hill had snapped Edinboro's 17-game home winning streak with an 83-74 win on February 8, the Griffins' first win ever against the Fighting Scots.
On Monday night, the Griffins hung with the Fighting Scots for a quarter, but after that it looked like the Edinboro team that ran off 16 straight wins at one point. The first quarter featured two ties and 11 lead changes. Edinboro took the lead for good at 21-18 late in the opening stanza on a layup and free throw by
Michelle Jahn.
Jontay Walton led the Scots with 16 points.
The Fighting Scots opened the second quarter with the first 10 points to cap off a run of 13 straight points. Jahn opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and
Ciara Rosten followed with a jumper and layup to make it 28-18.
Katie Fischer capped the run with another three for a 31-18 advantage with 7:51 left in the quarter.
Seton Hill would run off six straight points late in the half to pull to within 33-25, but Edinboro scored the final four points of the half on jumpers by Maggoe Moore and
Nicole Johnson.
Any comeback hopes Seton Hill may have had were quickly squashed in the third quarter as Edinboro had another 13-0 run to boost the lead from 39-29 to 52-29 with 2:55 left in the third quarter. Fischer accounted for seven points and Walton four in the run.
Seton Hill never got closer than 19 points the rest of the way, with the final 32-point margin the largest lead of the night.
Walton, making just her third start of the season, made 7-of-16 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and was 4-of-5 from the line. She added four rebounds and three steals.
Rosten chipped in with 16 points, making 8-of-12 field goals, while Fischer had 13 points and eight assists without a turnover. Jahn was also in double digits with 11 points while holding Seton Hill's leading scorer, Jenna Kaufman, to 10 points.
The true star of the night, though, was Sharpe. The 5'11" sophomore turned in the top performance of her career, finishing with 16 rebounds, matching the season high for Edinboro this year, along with eight points. Eight of her rebounds came on the offensive end.
Chrisanna Green finished with a double-double for Seton Hill with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The 50 points allowed by Edinboro marked the 18th time this season the Fighting Scots held an opponent under 60 points. Seton Hill shot just 32.6 percent (15-of-46) for the game, and made just 9-of-33 shots over the final three quarters. Edinboro shot 41.0 percent from the floor (32-of-78), attempting 32 more shots than the Griffins. The Fighting Scots were 7-of-21 from beyond the arc and made 11-of-14 at the line. Seton Hill was 15-of-24 from the charity stripe.
After being outrebounded in eight of the last ten games, the Fighting Scots dominated the glass, 48-35, including 20 offensive rebounds. Finally, Edinboro turned the ball over a season-low four times while forcing 18 Seton Hill miscues. It led to a 20-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
