He was named to Edinboro’s all-time team. Smith holds the Edinboro records for tackles for losses in a season with 20 in 2001, and tackles for losses in a career with 57. He began his career in 1999 as a true freshman, playing in 11 games and ending the season with 31 tackles, including 12 for losses totaling 74 yards and a team-high eight sacks. He earned first team All-PSAC West honors for the first time and was named to the USA Football.com freshman All-American team. He repeated as a sophomore in 2000 after leading the team in tackles for losses (11 for 46 yards) and sacks (5.5). He finished the year with 40 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles. In 2001 he picked up his third first team All-PSAC West honor after finishing second on the team with 62 tackles. That included a school-record 20 tackles for losses (for 85 yards), good for 12th in Division II. He led the team in sacks for the third straight year with eight, adding a fumble recovery and three forced fumbles. Smith was also accorded Division2Football.com All-Northeast Region honors in 2001. He capped his career in 2002 after once again finishing second on the team in tackles with 63. He led the team in tackles for losses for the third consecutive year with 14 of 48 yards, and was the team leader in sacks for the fourth straight year with four.  For his career, he played in 43 games and totaled 196 tackles, including 93 solo. He forced five fumbles and recovered two. He would continue his playing career with the Erie Freeze indoor football team during their inaugural season in 2005, helping the Freeze to the AIFL regular season championship in 2005, before losing to the Richmond Bandits in the AIFL Championship. The Bandits included fellow 2014 inductee Joe Valvoda. In all he would play arena football for five seasons. He also served as the head football coach at Franklin (Pa.)
