Heather Gates ('01) ranks as one of Edinboro’s all-time great women’s basketball players. Playing for the Fighting Scots from 1994-98, she was named the 1998 Nancy Acker Award winner after accumulating 1,320 career points and 1,301 career rebounds. She is one of only two players to score 1,000 career points and pull down 1,000 career rebounds. She ranks 11th in career scoring and holds the career record for rebounds while being the only player in school history to lead the team in rebounding all four years. She ranks second in career rebounds in the PSAC and also holds the PSAC record for rebounds in a season with 473 in 1996-97. Gates was named the 1996-97 PSAC West Player of the Year while leading the Fighting Scots to a 24-9 finish. Edinboro lost in the PSAC title game, then went on to win the NCAA Division II East Regional and advance to the Elite Eight for the lone time in school history.
She averaged 14.3 rpg., the top figure in Division II, along with 14.1 ppg. and would be named an honorable mention Kodak All-American. Gates was named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year in 1994-95 when she averaged 9.0 ppg. and 9.3 rpg., and was a first team All-PSAC West selection as a junior and senior. She also led the PSAC in rebounding in 1995-96 (10.8 rpg.). Playing in a school-record 117 games, Edinboro was 78-40 during her career with two NCAA playoff appearances. Among others, she ranks fifth in career steals (237) and seventh in career blocked shots (88), along with standing second in career free throws attempted (643) and fourth in career free throws made (397).
