Jack Swope ('76) is the recipient of the Athletic Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to an individual with Edinboro ties who has gone on to achieve notoriety outside of Edinboro. Swope was a four-year letter winner in soccer at Edinboro, and was an All-PSAC honoree while playing for the Fighting Scots. A year ago he was named to Edinboro’s all-time men’s soccer team. Since graduating from Edinboro with his bachelor’s degree in Economics Swope has gone on to enjoy an illustrious career as an NBA executive. He is currently the Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and Broadcasting with the Orlando Magic, joining the organization in 1987 as the Assistant General Manager/Director of Marketing. He previously served ten seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. The third person hired by the Magic, many of the Magic start-up operations are attributed to Swope, including the hiring of many of the front office personnel, along with overseeing all business operations and implementation of all Magic marketing strategies. He has been associated with the NBA since 1977 when he returned to his native Philadelphia as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers’ group sales department. In 1979 he was promoted to Director of Group Sales. He would continue to climb in the 76ers’ organization, being named the Director of Promotions in 1982, the Director of Marketing in 1984, and the Assistant General Manager in 1986. He was a part of the Philadelphia team that won the NBA title in 1983, and was in charge of the parade festivities which saw over 300,000 people attend. Today he is the longest-tenured day-to-day employee of the Magic. In fact, July 1 will mark his 31st year in the NBA, with 21 of those seasons with the Orlando Magic. From 1995-2001 he had joint duties as the CEO of the Solar Bears, a member of the IHL, while holding the title of senior vice president of the Magic. The Solar Bears won the Turner Cup in 2001. Swope served for four seasons as a member of the NBA’s Marketing Advisory Board, and for 15 years has attended the NBA Board of Governors meetings as a representative of the Magic. He and his wife Debbie reside in Winter Park, FL and have three children – Michael, Andrew and Lauren.
