Joe ranks as one of the top offensive linemen to play for the Fighting Scots, competing from 2000-03. He played in 44 games in all, starting 37 contests, including the final 34 games of his career. He was named to Edinboro’s all-time team after helping pave the way for two 1,000-yard rushers. He began his career at tackle but spent his final three years anchoring the line at center. As a senior Valvoda was accorded AFCA Division II All-American honors and was also an Associated Press Little All-American. He was also an honorable mention D2Football.com All-American, a D2Football.com All-Northeast Region and Football Gazette Division II All-Northeast Region second team pick and earned a spot on the Daktronics All-Northeast Region second team in addition to earning second team All-PSAC West honors. He was selected to play in the 2004 Cactus Bowl, the Division II All-Star game. Edinboro would finish the 2003 campaign with a 9-3 record, winning the PSAC West title while tying the school record for wins in a season. The Fighting Scots qualified for the NCAA Playoffs for the first time since 1995. In all, he was a three-time All-PSAC West honoree, earning first team accolades in 1991 and again in 1992. As a freshman in 2000 he started five games, three at center and two at right tackle.
