Mark Corey ('95) is the recipient of the Athletic Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to an individual with Edinboro ties who has gone on to achieve notoriety outside of Edinboro. Corey was actually an outstanding pitcher for the Edinboro baseball team from 1993-95, concluding his career with a 17-9 record with 154 strikeouts in 162.2 innings. He earned first team All-PSAC West honors in 1994 and again in 1995. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, the highest a Fighting Scot had ever been drafted. He played in the Reds’ farm system from 1995-99 before being traded to the New York Mets. He would become the first Edinboro player to reach the major leagues in 2001 when he was called up by the Mets. He would play for the Mets and Colorado Rockies in 2002, then would pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003 and ’04. He finished with a 2-7 record in the majors, appearing in a total of 81 games as a reliever, with 79 strikeouts in 90 innings. As a minor leaguer, he appeared in 416 total games and would become one of the top relievers in the minors in the mid-2000’s. He finished with a 58-67 record and a 4.11 ERA, recording 117 saves. He was converted to a closer by the Mets in 2001, and would finish with 27 total saves, a 9-4 record and 1.63 ERA while pitching in Double A and Triple A that season, prompting his first call-up to the majors. He would go on to save 30 games for Nashville (AAA) in 2003, 16 games for Nashville in 2004, and 28 games for Indianapolis (AAA) in 2005.
