Mason, Anderson Combine for 60 Points in 82-66 Win at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. (January 18, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's basketball team pulled out all the stops Wednesday at Clarion, using a big second half and a combined 60 points from Jaymon Mason and Mikael Anderson for an 82-66 victory. The Fighting Scots ended a five-game losing streak to climb to 5-11 and 3-9 in the PSAC West, while the Golden Eagles dropped their eighth straight to fall to 5-12 and 3-9, respectively.
 
Mason led all scorers with 36 points for his sixth 30-point game this season and the tenth of his career. He shot 11-for-17 from the field, making 6-of-8 3-pointers and 8-of-8 free throws. The 6'3" guard passed Fred Riley for 14th place on the all-time career scoring list at Edinboro with 1,300 points. He also passed Jakim Donaldson and his father, Tyrone Mason, for third all-time with 350 career made free throws.

Anderson, after tallying a career-high 29 points at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, registered 24 points, including 21 second-half points, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. It marked his fifth 20-point game this year.
 
Clarion held the lead for most of the early going in the first half, leading by as much as 13 points at 25-12 with 9:18 left before halftime. Edinboro got a boost with a 23-2 run that put them up, 35-27, with 3:38 left in the half. Mason made his first four 3-point attempts, all of which coincided with the run, as he accounted for 20 first-half points. Mike Beck, Sheldon Brogdon and Andre Frederick also scored during the run. The game was tied at 39 with eight seconds to go in the half before Clarion's Jamani Pierce sank a pair of free throws with one second left to give the Golden Eagles a 41-39 halftime advantage.
 
Anderson opened the second half with a go-ahead 3-pointer, which ignited a 16-0 Edinboro run that put the Scots ahead for good at 55-41 with 14:18 to play. Mason made four straight field goals during the run, including his fifth triple of the game, while Anderson and Frederick each added a layup. The Fighting Scots built their lead to as much as 16 points in the closing session, as the Golden Eagles got no closer than nine points the rest of the game. Edinboro shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes (16-for-28), while Clarion managed 32.1 percent (9-of-28). It marked the first time this season the Fighting Scots held an opponent to under 40 second-half points.
 
The win also marked Edinboro's 101st win over Clarion, which stands as the most wins the Fighting Scots have over one opponent in school history. They lead the all-time series, 101-72. Wednesday's game also marked the first meeting between Edinboro and Clarion since last year's PSAC Quarterfinals contest. The Golden Eagles won that matchup by an 83-69 score.
 
Edinboro finished at 48.4 percent from the field (30-for-62), shooting 11-for-25 from behind the arc and 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. Clarion shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62), making 9-of-28 3-pointers and 9-of-11 free throws. The Fighting Scots held a 34-20 lead in the paint and an 11-4 lead in second-chance points. The Boro forced the Golden Eagles into ten turnovers, while they turned the ball over just six times for a 14-3 lead in points off turnovers.
 
Sheldon Brogdon had seven points, while Mike Beck grabbed eight rebounds. Jon Girvin and Andre Frederick each had six points, with Girvin grabbing five boards.
 
Justin Grant led Clarion with 15 points, while Cameron Grumley and Manny Powell scored 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Jamal Bailey had a game-high 11 rebounds, while Pierce had eight boards.
 
Edinboro concludes its three-game road trip on Saturday, January 21 at Slippery Rock at 3:00 p.m.
