Mason Scores 27 Points, But Strong Seton Hill Offense Hands Edinboro 104-74 Road Defeat

GREENSBURG, Pa. (January 3, 2017) – Despite a team-high 27 points from redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason, the Edinboro University men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Seton Hill squad Tuesday night who dealt the Fighting Scots a 104-74 PSAC West road defeat. Edinboro dropped to 4-7 overall with a 2-5 mark in the PSAC West. The Griffins improved to 6-5 and 3-4, respectively. The contest marked Seton Hill's largest-ever margin of victory against Edinboro.
 
The Griffins shot 61.7 percent from the field (37-for-60), including 65.5 percent in the second half (19-for-29) and 14-for-20 from 3-point range. The Fighting Scots shot 42.0 percent (29-for-69) and 8-for-22 from behind the arc. Seton Hill held a 44-34 lead on the glass and an 18-4 advantage in fast break points. Seton Hill's Nathan Davis had a double-double with a game-high 37 points and 12 rebounds, going 12-for-21 from the field and 9-for-11 from 3-point range. Noah Davis, Nathan Davis' older brother, finished second on the team with 18 points.
 
Mason scored 20 of his points in the first half, while finishing with six assists with five rebounds. It marked his seventh game of the season with at least 20 points. Redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon was second on Edinboro with 14 points, along with four boards, while junior center Andre Frederick had 10 points with five rebounds. Senior forward Mikael Anderson led the team with seven rebounds and tallied eight markers.
 
The Fighting Scots drew first blood in the game with a layup by Anderson for a 2-0 lead with 19:26 left in the first half. It would be their lone lead of the game. Leading, 6-5, with 16:48 to go in the opening period, the Griffins used an 11-0 run, aided by three consecutive threes, two from Nathan Davis and one from Noah Davis, to extend their lead to 12 points, their largest lead of the half, with 14:53 remaining in the first session. Edinboro would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as Seton Hill took a 47-39 lead at intermission.
 
The Griffins continued to build on to their lead in the second half, opening the period with a 11-4 run for a 58-43 lead with 16:08 left to play. Seton Hill maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest and led by as much as 36 points. Nathan Davis connecting on 4-of-6 3-pointers for 18 second-half points.
 
Mason moved into 19th all-time at Edinboro with 1,189 career points, passing Gary Stanton and Tom Taylor. He is eight points away from passing Jim Prokell for 18th all-time.
 
Edinboro returns home on Friday, January 6 for a PSAC West contest versus Pitt-Johnstown, starting at 7:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
