Fighting Scots Pin Vikings 39-4

CLEVELAND, Oh. (January 24, 2014) – Edinboro used three pins plus a technical fall and major decision to hand host Cleveland State a 39-4 defeat in an Eastern Wrestling League match at Woodling Gymnasium on Friday night.  The Fighting Scots have now won the last nine meetings with the Vikings while improving to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the EWL.  Cleveland State fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Edinboro is right back in action on Saturday night, hosting Bloomsburg at 7:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Fighting Scots would claim the EWL regular season crown with a victory.
 
On Friday night Edinboro received pins from Kory Mines, Patrick Jennings and Vic Avery, but it was the second match of the night that was Edinboro's biggest win. 
 
After Vince Pickett opened the match with a 9-4 decision over Corbin Boone at 197 lbs. to improve to 12-8, Ernest James squared off against Riley Shaw in the heavyweight match.  James had lost to Shaw a year ago in the EWL Championships, 4-3 in a tiebreaker, propelling Shaw to a berth at Nationals.  This time around James, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, won by the identical 4-3 score.  The fifth-year senior boosted his senior record to 19-5 with his 90th career victory.
 
Mines, also ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat at 125 lbs., followed with a fall at 1:25 over John Martin.  The redshirt junior improved to 17-6.  Second-ranked A.J. Schopp won a 17-0 technical fall over Dan King at 133 lbs. to move to 23-1, and top-ranked Mitchell Port was an 8-2 winner over Jared McKinley at 141 lbs.  He remained undefeated at 19-0 while giving Edinboro a 20-0 lead.
 
Cleveland State would win its lone match of the night at 149 lbs.  Freshman Jeff Miller (3-5), filling in for starter Dave Habat, lost by major decision to Nick Montgomery 9-1.         
 
Edinboro would end the match winning the final four bouts.  Johnny Greisheimer (18-7), ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat, won for the eighth time in his last nine matches at 157 lbs. with a 15-4 major decision over R.J. LaBeef.  Kasey Burnett-Davis improved to 10-5 with an 11-4 decision over Matt Donohoe at 165 lbs.
 
Jennings and Avery capped the evening with falls at 174 and 184 lbs., respectively.  Jennings evened his record at 8-8 with a pin at 2:14 over Nick Corba.  Avery, ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News and 15th by InterMat, won by fall at 3:24 over Xavier Dye.  He is now 13-2.
