EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2014) – The Thursday night football special at Sox Harrison Stadium turned into a nightmare for Edinboro, as Gannon scored the game's final 52 points to claim a 52-7 victory. The Fighting Scots fall to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC West while Gannon improved to 5-2 and 4-2, respectively.
Cody Harris vaults over a Gannon defender.The contest was eerily similar to last year's game at Gannon, when Edinboro lost for the first time in the series after seven straight wins. The two teams were tied at 14-14 in the second quarter before the Golden Knights scored the game's final 41 points in a 55-14 win.
Edinboro jumped out to a 7-0 less than three minutes into the game following a Gannon turnover. The Golden Knights had driven to the Edinboro 40 before Brock Jones coughed up the ball on a hit by
Thomas Dover, with
Mike Shansky recovering at the 41.
Anfreenee Williams burst around right end on the very play for the Scots, going 58 yards before being knocked out of bounds at the one. The freshman would score on the next play, and
Paul Ortiz' extra point gave Edinboro a 7-0 lead at the 12:28 mark of the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the rest of the half featured a pair of turnovers and an 11-yard punt, all giving Gannon outstanding field position. Edinboro entered the game with just three turnovers in the first six games, but would hand the ball over to the Golden Knights four times. Gannon, meanwhile, did not turn the ball over after Jones' fumble.
The Golden Knights put together a pair of 85-yard drives to take a 14-7 lead after one quarter. Jones made up for his fumble with a 64-yard burst to tie the game with 7:31 left in the period. The second touchdown was set up by a 46-yard strike from Liam Nadler to Justin Caliste. Facing a 3rd-and-5 at the EU 7, Nadler appeared to be sacked but broke free and scored with 10 seconds left.
Gannon tacked on 24 points in the second quarter. The first score came after an Edinboro fumble at the EU 20. Jones scored his second touchdown on a 20-yard run on the very next play. The lead grew to 28-7 following an 11-yard punt by Edinboro, giving Gannon the ball at the EU 32. Four plays later the Knights were in the end zone as Nadler hooked up with Jesstin Hamm on a seven-yard TD pass.
Darren Massey caught 10 passes for 80 yards.Cody Harris was intercepted on the next series, just his second of the season, snapping a string of 157 passes without an interception. Gannon took over at the Boro 32. The Edinboro defense would limit the Knights to one first down, but Karch Holland came in and kicked a 37-yard field goal for a 31-7 lead with 3:18 remaining in the half.
Gannon would build its lead to 38-7 at halftime after Edinboro turned the ball over on downs at the GU 40. They drove the 60 yards in seven plays, with Alex Papson hitting paydirt on a four-yard run with ten seconds left in the half.
That score capped an impressive offensive display by Gannon. The Golden Knights totaled 368 yards over the first 30 minutes, while Edinboro had 105 yards.
Edinboro put together a pair of solid drives to start the second half, but both ended in turnovers. Taking the second half kickoff, the Scots drove to the Gannon 20 before Harris threw his second interception in the end zone. Gannon's Ta'Von Bailey returned the pick to the 12.
Gannon proceeded to drive 88 yards in just seven plays thanks to 25 and 27 yards runs and a 24-yard pass. Nadler scored his second rushing touchdown on a two-yard run with 6:19 left in the third quarter for a 45-7 lead.
Boro defense stops Brock Jones.Edinboro would put together a 11-play drive to the Gannon 4, but on the 11th play Harris fumbled the handoff, with Gannon recovering just before the end of the quarter.
Gannon needed ten plays to cover the 91 yards, once again chewing up some huge chunks of yardage. Nadler completed 27 and 28 yard passes and Jones capped the drive with a 12-yard run, followed by a 25-yard run in which he dragged several tacklers into the end zone.
The junior running back keyed a Gannon offense which piled up 601 yards, the fourth-highest total ever against Edinboro, including 305 yards on the ground. He came in ranked second in the PSAC and sixth nationally with an average of 142.5 ypg. He far exceeded that, ending the night with 212 yards and 3 TDs on 22 carries. He went over 1,000 yards for the season in the process. The 212 yards ranks eighth by an opponent against Edinboro.
Nadler completed 19 of 28 passes for 296 yards, with Caliste hauling in 9 passes for 123 yards.
Williams accounted for a large portion of Edinboro's offense, which totaled 276 yards for the night. The freshman had his second 100-yard game as he finished with 112 yards on 17 carries. Harris completed 22 of 32 passes for 150 with the two interceptions.
Massey, who entered the game ranked second in the PSAC and seventh in Division II in receptions per game, ended the night with 10 catches for 80 yards. He now has 57 catches for the season, which ranks third in a season. He is just eight catches shy of a new season record.
Edinboro will play its third straight night game and second consecutive Thursday night affair on Thursday, October 23 when the Fighting Scots travel to Erie Veterans Stadium to play Mercyhurst.
