INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2015) – Chris Temple ran for a school-record six touchdowns to lead Indiana(Pa.) to a 42-21 Homecoming win over Edinboro on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Fighting Scots to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West, while IUP improved to 3-1 and 2-0, respectively.

Nick Helmick caught a two-yard touchdown pass.
Edinboro was looking to win for the second straight visit to George P. Miller Stadium, but could never get a handle on Temple. The 220-pound sophomore was filling in for leading rusher Luigi Linza-Brista. He enjoyed the record-breaking day with the six touchdowns while carrying the ball 28 times for 234 yards, his second 100-yard effort of the season. The 234 yards is the fourth-highest total by an Edinboro opponent.

IUP blitzed the Fighting Scots with three touchdowns in the first nine minutes of the game. The Crimson Hawks took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in five plays, with Temple scoring the first of his six touchdowns on a 22-yard run, bursting off right tackle into the end zone. Ryan Stewart booted the first of his six extra points.

Edinboro turned the ball over on its very first play from scrimmage, as Jake Sisson fumbled with IUP recovering at the Edinboro 29. Three plays later the Crimson Hawks were in the end one, with Temple doing the honors on a six-yard run.
Following a three-and-out for the Fighting Scots, IUP made it 21-0 with a seven-play, 50-yard drive. Temple finished it off with another six-yard run. Over the first three drives the 220-pound sophomore had 68 yards.

The first quarter saw IUP run off 22 plays, 16 of them in Edinboro territory, with nine plays of 10-or-more yards.  The Crimson Hawks finished with 12 first downs and 185 total yards in the opening 15 minutes, while Edinboro had two first downs and eight total yards.

Alex Caratelli caught a team-high five passes.
IUP made it 28-0 early in the second quarter on a five-play, 49-yard march following an Edinboro punt. Temple carried on all five plays, starting the drive with a 28-yard burst, and ending it with an eight-yard TD run up the middle.
The Crimson Hawks would threaten to score one more time in the half, driving to the Edinboro one before Anthony Principale came up with his first career interception at the goal line.

Edinboro followed with its best drive of the first half, moving from its own 18 to the IUP 4. The big play was a 31-yard hookup between Jake Sisson and Darren Massey. Unfortunately, the drive would stall at the five on a pair of incompletions as the half ended.

Both teams would score twice in the third quarter. Edinboro's defense accounted for the first points of the half when freshman cornerback Mitch Thomas stepped in front of a Lenny Williams pass and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. It marked the second straight week in which the defense scored the first points of the game for Edinboro. The return, the first career pickoff for Thomas, was the fifth-longest in school history and came with 11:58 remaining In the period.

IUP responded with a 12-play, 76-yard drive, converting once on 3rd-and-11 and another time on 3rd-and-10. Temple carried on five of the last six plays, plunging in from a yard out for touchdown number five and a 35-7 lead with 5:35 left in the third quarter.

Edinboro's offense got on the board on the ensuing series. Sisson found Alex Caratelli for a 38-yard gain to the IUP20, and Cory Bell ran for 15 yards on the next play. On 3rd-and-goal, Sisson fired a bullet to Nick Helmick for a two-yard touchdown with 1:50 left in the third.

Unfortunately, on the very next play of scrimmage Temple spoiled any comeback hopes of the Scots as he capped his record-breaking effort with a 67-yard touchdown run.

Edinboro would end the scoring with 41 seconds to go on a five-yard run by backup quarterback Jon Girvin.

IUP ended the day with 492 total yards, most of that coming on the ground. The Crimson Hawks came into the game ranked second in the PSAC in rushing offense at just over 290 yards per game. They ended with 383 yards rushing, the second week in a row Edinboro has allowed over 300 yards rushing. That figure is also tied for the third-highest total ever by an Edinboro opponent.

Edinboro, meanwhile, totaled 225 yards. The Fighting Scots had 147 yards passing as Sisson completed 15 of 26 passes with a touchdown and 2 INTs. The Scots did manage to run for 78 yards against an IUP defense that held Mercyhurst to six yards rushing a week earlier and came in ranked second in the PSAC in rushing defense at 68.7 ypg. That figure was impacted by five sacks, as well.

Bell finished with a season-high 56 yards in 14 carries. Caratelli had 5 receptions for 53 yards. IUP double-covered Darren Massey all day long and held the third-leading receiver in Division II to 3 catches for 41 yards.
Williams completed 9 of 12 passes for 90 yards and carried the ball six times for 94 yards. Walt Pegues caught 7 passes for 88 yards.

Edinboro returns home next Saturday, October 10 looking to celebrate Homecoming against the surprise team in the PSAC in Clarion. The Golden Eagles improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play with a win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
