Edinboro’s Bats Roll in Sweep of Pitt-Johnstown

EDINBORO, Pa. – Playing its fifth doubleheader in the last six days, the Edinboro softball team rode the strong pitching of Kalet Lenart in game number one and an 11-hit effort in the nightcap for a sweep of visiting Pitt-Johnstown. Edinboro won by scores of 5-1 and 6-3 to improve to 17-10-1 overall and 9-8-1 in the PSAC West. UPJ, in its first-year of competition and coached by former Edinboro graduate assistant Sabrina Lane, is now 5-25 and 5-17, respectively.

Edinboro will see the Mountain Cats in their next doubleheader as the two teams meet again in Johnston on Wednesday, April 22.

GAME ONE - Edinboro 5, Pitt-Johnstown 1
The Fighting Scots jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after one inning, bunching together three hits in the opening frame. Kylie Mason opened the frame reaching second on a two-base error by the left fielder and moved to third on a single by Laura Crooks. Heather Tighe's single plated Mason, and after a double steal by Crooks and Tighe, Crooks scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Payne. Tighe would score the third run on a passed ball.

Edinboro would add single runs in the third and fourth innings. Crooks single and stole second to open the third inning. She moved up on a Tighe sacrifice and eventually scored on Shelby Proctor's single. In the fourth inning Mason reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and would come around to score on Crooks double.

Lenart lost her shutout in the seventh inning when Amanda O'Toole hit a leadoff home run. She took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before settling for a four-hitter, walking two and striking out three. The sophomore improved to 5-3.

After seeing her 11-game hitting streak snapped in the second game of Friday's doubleheader with Seton Hill, Crooks went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a pair of stolen bases as Edinboro stole five bases. Proctor was also 3-for-3 with an RBI.

GAME TWO - Edinboro 6, Pitt-Johnstown 3

Haley Struebing before her solo home run.
Edinboro took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a Mountain Cats' error. Mason reached on a two-base error and stole third. She would score on a groundout by Tighe.  Haley Streubing, who was a perfect 3-for-3, scored the second run on a double by Proctor.

UPJ grabbed a 3-2 lead with one run in the second on O'Toole's second home run of the day and two more in the third.

The Fighting Scots regained the lead at 4-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, again aided by a UPJ error. Crooks tripled to left and scored on a Tighe single to right for the first run. Tighe would come around to score when Brooke Callaghan singled and the ball was misplayed by the right fielder for an error.

Edinboro would add two more runs on home runs in the fifth inning. Crooks led off the inning with a drive down the left field line that went over the left fielder's head. She proceeded to circle the bases for an inside the park home run. Struebing followed with one of the more conventional variety, poking her sixth home run to left center.

Payne, who relieved starter Samantha Weaver in the third inning, improved to 5-2 as the freshman tossed five shutout innings. She allowed a pair of hits and a walk while striking out five.

In addition to Struebing's three hits, Crooks continued her hot hitting with two hits in three at bats. Proctor was 2-for-3, as well, and Tighe drove in a pair of runs.
