CALIFORNIA, Pa. (April 1, 2016) – The Edinboro University softball team ran into a red-hot Vulcans squad on Friday afternoon as #13 California (Pa.) dealt the visiting Fighting Scots a pair of losses in a PSAC doubleheader. Edinboro is now 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC on the season, while Cal notched it's 19
th-straight victory to improve to 19-1 overall and 6-0 in the PSAC.
The Vulcans took game one by a score of 8-0 before escaping with a slim 3-1 victory in the second game of the afternoon.
The Fighting Scots will have a chance to rebound tomorrow, April 2, as they head to Slippery Rock for another PSAC doubleheader. Edinboro swept the season series with The Rock last season. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Game One: California 8, Edinboro 0The Fighting Scots faced off with reigning PSAC West Pitcher of the Year in Alex Sagl in the opening game of the doubleheader. The senior threw her seventh complete game, totaling 13 strikeouts and giving up two hits, while improving to 9-1.
The Vulcans struck first in the contest, as Megan Jahoda brought home two runs on a double in the bottom of the second to give Cal a 2-0 lead.
Edinboro broke through in the top of the fourth inning, recording its first two hits of the ball game to put runners on first and third, but were unfortunately unable to capitalize.
Cal added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead, highlighted by a two-run homer by Hailey Wilson. The Vulcans added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-0 lead.
Carley Nasca got the start for the Fighting Scots, pitching 4.1 innings while giving up four hits, four walks and striking out two batters. With the loss, the freshman is now 3-4 on the year.
Game Two: California 3, Edinboro 1Edinboro struck first in the second game of the doubleheader, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Brooke Callaghan led off the inning with a solo homer to left center field, her team-leading third of the season.
Cal answered back in the following inning thanks to a leadoff home run of its own from Taylor Robblee to tie the game up at 1-1.
After two quiet innings, the Vulcans got back on the board in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Jacquelyn Fowler drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Cal scored on a fielding error two batters later.
Jessica Hyland reached first on a fielding error to begin the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Fighting Scots were unable to comeback in the final inning.
Kerri Stevens started in the circle for the Fighting Scots, pitching six solid innings in the loss. Stevens gave up just three hits while walking four and fanning a pair of batters as she recorded her third loss of the season to put her record at 2-3.
Meghan Uher recorded the win for Cal, pitching a complete game to stay undefeated at 5-0. Uher gave up six hits while walking one and striking out three Fighting Scots.
