EDINBORO, Pa. (April 23, 2016) – The Edinboro University softball team concluded its 2016 regular season celebrating both a sweep of PSAC West foe Slippery Rock and the departure of three seniors who took the field for the final time at Gierlak Gardens. Seniors
Katie Holmes,
Kylie Mason, and
Haley Struebing were honored prior to today's twinbill sweep, the third sweep of The Rock in their four-year careers.
The Fighting Scots took game one, 5-2, before closing out the day with an 8-7 nail biter. With the sweep, Edinboro improved to 14-20 overall and 8-12 in the PSAC West, while The Rock fell to 19-20 overall and 8-10 in Western play.
Game One – Edinboro 5, Slippery Rock 2
Kylie Mason drew a leadoff walk to begin her senior day doubleheader and was advanced to second on an
Olivia Jankowski sacrifice bunt before
Brooke Callaghan delivered a double into deep right to score Mason and give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Edinboro lead grew to 2-0 when
MaryLouise Lindner singled home a run in the bottom of the second and blossomed to 5-0 in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff single by Jankowski, Callaghan hit her second double of the day to score Jankowski.
Heather Tighe jacked a homer to straight away center, her first of the season, to conclude the three-run inning.
After three scoreless innings, The Rock finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Megan Malone and Katie Kaiser each brought in a run on singles to cut the score to 5-2.
Carley Nasca (7-7) took over from there as she held The Rock to just two hits over the course of the final three innings to earn the complete game victory. Nasca tossed seven innings, giving up nine hits while striking out two batters and walking one.
Brooke Dawson (8-8) took the loss for The Rock, giving up five runs and six hits in three innings work.
Tighe finished the opening contest 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Callaghan also finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Game Two – Edinboro 8, Slippery Rock 7
Much like the day's opening contest, the Fighting Scots jumped out to an early lead, taking a 5-0 lead after the first inning. The big hit came following back-to-back singles from
Haley Struebing and
Olivia Jankowski,
Brooke Callaghan ripped a home run into left field to give the Fighting Scots a 3-0 lead.
Callaghan recorded her fourth RBI of the day in the very next inning, singling home a run to give the Fighting Scots a 6-0 lead.
The Rock began chipping away at the lead in the subsequent inning. Emily Nagle brought home a run to make it 6-1 in the third, before a Katie Kaiser three-run homer in the top of the fourth made it 6-4. Slippery Rock cut the lead to one at 6-5 on a sacrifice fly from Lauren Hawley in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Claire Johnston pushed the Edinboro lead back up to two runs with a pinch hit RBI-single to make the score 7-5. The two teams traded runs in the next inning as well as Ashley Samluk singled home a run in the top of the sixth and Struebing doubled home a run in the bottom half inning to make it 8-6 as the game shifted to the top of the seventh. Struebing's RBI was her 77
th all-time, the fourth most in school history and her double, her 22
nd all-time, ties her for fifth in program history.
Heather Tighe hit her first HR of the season
Taylor Payne entered the circle in a save situation for the Fighting Scots to begin the seventh and was able to shut the door to pick up her second save of the season. The Rock put runners in scoring position with two outs, but Payne struck out the final batter to preserve the lead.
Amanda Metz (2-0) recorded the win, giving up five hits and two runs while striking out a batter. Carley DeRose (8-7) took the loss for The Rock, giving up nine hits and eight runs with four strikeouts.
Brooke Callaghan was 2-for-2 with a homerun and four RBIs before an injury forced her out of the lineup.
