Fletcher Enjoys Another Big Effort in 47-25 Loss at Gannon

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Gannon 47, Edinboro 25
  • Records:  Edinboro (3-3, 1-2 PSAC West), Gannon (2-4, 1-2 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Erie, Pa. – McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story:  The Fighting Scots got a first-hand look at the leading rusher in Division II, and weren't thrilled with what they saw. Gannon's Marc Jones came in averaging 206.4 ypg. on the ground with 11 TDs. He burned the Fighting Scots for 261 yards and a school-record 6 TDs on 23 carries. Edinboro's Walter Fletcher more than held up his end of the running back duel as the PSAC's third-leading rusher, finishing with 165 yards on 22 carries with a pair of touchdowns. He added a third touchdown receiving. Edinboro had to play without starting quarterback Jake Sisson from midway through the second quarter on. Sisson went out at that point and did not return.  Turnovers – three in all – once again hampered the Fighting Scots.

BREAKING DOWN THE GAME
  • Edinboro put together a 12-play, 82-yard drive on its second possession of the game to grab a 7-0 lead. Sisson completed five passes for 48 yards in the drive, while Fletcher carried four times for 35 yards. The redshirt sophomore tailback went the final eight yards for the touchdown, going off the left side, juking out a defender, and bursting into the end zone. Mike Cushma converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 5:36 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Gannon answered with a pair of touchdowns in less than two minutes, the latter set up by a turnover. Marc Jones scored his first of his six touchdowns on a 38-yard run to cap a 5-play, 75-yard march with 2:58 left in the first quarter. On Edinboro's second play from scrimmage, Sisson was intercepted, with Tyger Winston returning it to the EU 27. A bad lateral led to a ten-yard loss, but on 3rd-and-20, Jimmy Keefe completed a 26-yard pass to Joey Cox. Jones would ramble 11 yards on the play for a 14-7 lead with 1:01 left in the quarter.
  • Gannon would score twice and Edinboro once in the second quarter, as well. Edinboro answered the Golden Knights' score with a short 5-play, 45-yard drive. Thirty-seven of the yards came on a Sisson-to-James Clark completion down to the GU 3. On 3rd-and-goal, Sisson rolled left and threw to Fletcher in the left flat for a three-yard touchdown pass. Cushma's extra point was wide left and Gannon led 14-13 with 14:22 left in the quarter.
  • The Golden Knights needed just one play and 18 seconds to score following the Boro score.Tyler Palka caught a 61-yard pass from Keefe for a 21-13 lead with 14:04 left.
  • Edinboro's second turnover gave the Golden Knights another short field. Gannon recovered a bad shotgun snap at the Edinboro 14. Four plays later Jones was in the end zone on a one-yard run for a 28-13 advantage with 11:05 remaining.
  • Sisson would go out midway through the next series following a hit on a pass completion. The senior would not return as the team's went to halftime with Gannon leading 28-13.
  • Edinboro closed the gap to 28-19 coming out of the half. Backup quarterback Andrew Tomko directed a 4-play, 84-yard march. Most of those yards came on Fletcher's third touchdown of the game. He took a handoff up the middle, broke a tackle, then bounced it outside to the left and raced down the sideline for a 67-yard scoring run. Cushma's extra point was blocked.
  • Gannon would post the next three touchdowns to put the game out of reach, all on runs by Jones. The 5'11", 225 lb. junior scored on runs of 3, 57, and 15 yards as the Golden Knights built the lead to 47-19 with 4:19 to play.
  • Edinboro tallied the final score behind backup running back Kyle Galyk, who carried eight times for 53 yards as part of an 11-play, 65-yard drive. Galyk scored his first touchdown of the season on a two-yard with 17 seconds to play.

GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro finished with 412 total yards, but Gannon ran up 530 yards, Balance was once again in evidence for the Fighting Scots with 208 yards rushing and 204 yards passing. Gannon finished with 314 yards rushing and 216 yards passing. The Golden Knights held a 32:01 to 27:59 advantage in time of possession, and did not commit a turnover to Edinboro's three.
  • The battle of two of the top three rushers in the PSAC was as good as advertised. Gannon's Marc Jones ran for 261 yards and a school record 6 TDs on 23 carries. He added two receptions for 22 yards. Walter Fletcher, coming off a career-best 230-yard effort last week vs. Clarion, recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season, finishing with 165 yards and 2 TDs on 22 rushes. He added three receptions for 26 yards and a touchdown. Fletcher now has 826 yards. That is the highest total at Edinboro since Andre Burke ran for a school-record 1,713 yards in 2004. That is the last time an Edinboro ballcarrier reached 1,000 yards.
  • Jake Sisson completed 11-of-18 passes for 114 yards with a touchdown and an interception before exiting with an injury. Seeing the first extended action of his career, redshirt freshman Andrew Tomko completed 9-of-19 passes for 90 yards with an interception.
  • James Clark continued to put up big numbers. He caught eight passes for 109 yards, making it five straight games with at least eight receptions. The junior wide receiver also recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season, although he saw a streak of four straight games with a touchdown.
  • Walter Fletcher scored on a run of 67 yards. He now has three runs of 50-or-more yards this season.
  • Edinboro has now had a defensive back lead the team in tackles in all six games. In fact, the Fighting Scots' top three tacklers were defensive backs, led by Brandon Anderson, who had 14 stops.
  • The offensive line finally allowed a sack after not giving one up the previous two games. Edinboro has given up just four sacks all year while passing 251 times. The Fighting Scots came into the game ranked first in the PSAC and sixth in Division II in fewest sacks allowed. When Andrew Tomko was sacked late in the second quarter, it snapped a string of 94 straight passes without a sack.
  • With Gannon scoring 47 points, the past six winners of the Edinboro-Gannon game has scored 40-or-more points. Edinboro now holds an 8-4 lead in the series.
  • Edinboro is undefeated at home at 3-0, and winless on the road at 0-3. Oddly enough, all three road contests have seen temperatures in the 80's. The three home games have featured temperatures at 60 or below.
