Fighting Scots Record Four Victories on Saturday to Conclude Salem Tournament Undefeated

SALEM, Va. - The Edinboro University softball team picked up four wins on Saturday to open the season 5-0 as they concluded the Salem leg of their 14-game spring trip. The Fighting Scots completed a suspended contest and participated in a rare scheduled tripleheader.

Edinboro opened the day finishing last night's suspended contest against Davis & Elkins, holding on to win a 6-5 decision. The loss snapped a five game winning streak for the Senators as they fell to 5-2.  In the day's second contest, the Fighting Scots scored an 8-0 victory over Salem International as the Tigers dropped to 7-13. In the third contest, Edinboro defeated Chowan, 7-1, to hand the Hawks their 13th loss of the season to sit at 12-13. In the day's final contest, the Fighting Scots took down West Liberty, 11-3, in six innings to push the Hilltoppers to 2

The Fighting Scots receive some much deserved rest and warmer weather as they pack up for sunny Clermont, Florida, to conclude their spring trip. Edinboro returns to action on Monday, March 13, taking on Caldwell at 6:00 p.m.

Game One – Edinboro 6, Davis & Elkins 5 (RESUMED FROM LAST NIGHT)
The Fighting Scots once again struck first in the nightcap following a Heh leadoff single. Fleckenstein advanced Heh to second with a bunt and she reached third on the throw setting up a Callaghan RBI single through the right side.

Davis & Elkins took the lead in the bottom of the second at 2-1 following a two-run inning, but it didn't last for long. A Fleckenstein RBI double followed by Callaghan reaching on a fielder's choice led to the first Fighting Scot home run of the season. Jankowski did the honors courtesy of a deep shot to straight away center to give Edinboro the lead at 5-2.

The score remained in favor of Edinboro when a light malfunction during a Heather Tigehe at bat caused the game to be suspended until Saturday morning.

Action resumed on Saturday morning with Tighe returning to the batter's box in what may be the longest at bat of her career before flying out to center.

After a couple of quiet innings, the Fighting Scots added some insurance in the top of the seventh to take a 6-2 lead. After a Heh single, Callaghan delivered an RBI triple to bring her home.

16207The Fighting Scots had to survive a furious rally, however, as Davis & Elkins led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run and followed up with a two-run double to cut the score to 6-5. Junior Kerri Stevens entered the contest to try and halt the run and save the victory with two outs and a runner on second. After a walk and a passed ball put runners on first and third, Stevens got a groundball to force the runner out at second and secure the win.

Amanda Metz (1-0) recorded her first win of the season, pitching 4.0 innings with five hits, two runs and a pair of strikeouts. Stevens recorded her first save of the year. Samantha Weaver made an appearance in relief duty, pitching 2.2 innings with four hits and three runs, one earned.

Allie Lapallo (2-2) took the loss for Davis & Elkins, giving up four runs in relief duty of starter Victoria Krystynak.

Game Two – Edinboro 8, Salem International 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
The Edinboro bats continued to roll through the day, ringing up an 8-0 victory in five innings over Salem International, but it was sophomore pitcher Carley Nasca's season debut that took center stage. Nasca (1-0) picked up her first win of the season in dominant fashion, giving up just one hit and striking out three batters.

One of the reasons Nasca gave up just a single hit was due to a spectacular diving stop on a grounder screaming towards the gap in the top of the second by Jessica Hyland. The second baseman was then somehow able to get off a throw and beat the runner at first.

The Edinboro offense continued its habit of scoring early and often. The Fighting Scots got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on a Salem International throwing error. Edinboro added another three runs in the very next inning as Hyland scored on a throwing error by Salem International and Olivia Jankowski and Theresa Fleckenstein each recorded an RBI single. 16209

Edinboro added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on a Danna Heh two-run double.

Nasca's dominant performance was able to preserve the eight run lead through the fifth to secure the victory.

Kayla Lynch (4-6) received the loss for Salem International, going 4.0 innings, giving up five hits, eight runs, one earned. The Tigers committed five costly errors in the contest.

Game Three – Edinboro 7, Chowan 1
The deadly combination of a potent offense and shutdown pitching prevailed again as the Fighting Scots picked up a 7-1 victory over Chowan. Senior Kalet Lenart (1-0) joined Nasca in pitching a complete game, giving up just four hits and fanning seven batters.

Edinboro totaled 11 hits in the contest, led by five Fighting Scots with 2 hits apiece, including Jankowski's 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs performance.

Jankowski's first RBI came in the top of the first, driving in Callaghan to give Edinboro the early lead. Tighe singled in Callaghan again in the top of the fourth to give Edinboro a 2-0 lead before Chowan cut into the deficit in the fifth to make it 2-1.

The Fighting Scots responded in a big way, scoring five runs in the sixth to take the winning 7-1 lead. Edinboro batted all the way through the order, highlighted by Brittany Allen's two-run single to left center. Victoria Allocco, Fleckenstein and Jankowski also brought home runs during the inning.

Audrey Hubbard (0-5) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up 11 hits and seven runs in six innings of work.

Game Four – Edinboro 11, West Liberty 3 (SIX INNINGS)
Offense shined again for the Fighting Scots in the day's final contest resulting in a game being ended due to the eight-run rule. Edinboro scored in all but one inning as they cruised to their fourth victory of the day.

The Fighting Scots turned 11 hits into 11 runs and Amanda Metz (2-0) picked up her second win of the season, pitching 3.1 hitless innings in relief duty.

As has become routine, the Fighting Scots scored first in the top inning courtesy of a Jankowski RBI double. West Liberty tacked on a run of their own in the bottom half inning to knot the game up at 1-1.

Edinboro exploded for six runs in the top of the third, highlighted by freshman Victoria Allocco's three-run double. Callaghan also added an RBI double in the inning. 16206

The Hilltoppers came right back with two runs of their own to make it 7-3, but the Fighting Scots would tack on four more runs in the next few innings to earn the victory.

Allocco finished the contest with a team-high three RBIs, going 2-for-3.  Jankowski totaled multiple RBIs for the fourth time in five games, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Sophomore Roni Lipinski also recorded two RBIs in her pinch hit appearance.  Callaghan finished 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Linda Hall took the loss for the Hilltoppers.
