Edinboro Drops a Pair to California(Pa.)

EDINBORO, Pa . – The Edinboro softball team saw its record fall under .500 for the first time in the 2017 season on Monday after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to California(Pa.). the Fighting Scots dropped the opener, 8-0, and then fell in the nightcap by a 10-3 score. That leaves the Fighting Scots at 11-12 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC West, while the Vulcans improved to 14-10 and 5-3, respectively.

After playing three doubleheaders in the last three days, Edinboro will have a day off before returning to the diamond on Wednesday, April 12 at Clarion for a pair of games.

GAME 1 – California(Pa.) 8, Edinboro 0 (6 innings)

Starting pitchers Carley Nasca of Edinboro and Portia McBride of Cal battled on mainly even terms for five innings before the Vulcans broke the first game open with a six-run sixth inning. Nasca (3-4) limited Cal to just a pair of fourth inning runs over the first five frames while scattering eight hits. The Vulcans would bunch together eight hits in the decisive sixth inning on a windy afternoon to drive Nasca from the game. The big blow was a three-run homer by Jackie Fowler. Edinboro would manage two hits against McBride, singles by Danna Heh to leadoff the bottom of the first, and a single by Theresa Fleckenstein in the seventh.

GAME 2 – California(Pa.) 10, Edinboro 3

Edinboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, helped by a Cal error. Fleckenstein walked with one out, with Brooke Callaghan reaching on an error to make it first and second. Olivia Jankowski loaded the bases on a bunt single before Heather Tighe drove in both runs with a single to center. Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots would not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning, after Cal had plated ten runs. Edinboro maintained the 2-0 lead until the top of the third when the Vulcans scored four times, two on a home run by Megan Jahoda. Starting pitcher Kalet Lenart had a one-two-three fourth inning, but the Vulcans would score three more times in the fifth inning. Edinboro would score a single run in the sixth inning courtesy of another Cal error. With two outs and Heather Tigthe on first, Jessica Hyland rolled a single through the right side. The ball was misplayed by the right fielder, with Tighe coming all the way around to score. Edinboro finished the game with five hits – singles by Callaghan, Jankowski, Tighe, Hyland, and Victoria Allocco.
