Edinboro Splits a Pair of One-Run Games With Slippery Rock on Friday Afternoon

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro University softball team resumed conference action on Friday afternoon, splitting a pair of one-run contests with Slippery Rock by identical 3-2 scores. The Fighting Scots gutted out the victory in the day's opening contest before falling to The Rock in extra innings. With the split, the Fighting Scots improved to 13-14 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC West while Slippery Rock is now 10-17 overall and also 4-6 in conference play.
 
The Fighting Scots are scheduled to be right in action tomorrow afternoon, hosting another Western Division foe. Edinboro takes on Seton Hill in a doubleheader with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
 
Game One – Edinboro 3, Slippery Rock 2
The Fighting Scots took advantage of a costly Slippery Rock error to score what proved to be the winning run in the opening contest. Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Abigail Sallot came around to score on a dropped fly ball by the centerfielder to give Edinboro a 3-1 lead. Carley Nasca (4-4) gave up just one more run over the final three innings as she threw a solid outing in the complete game victory. Nasca gave up just two runs on nine hits and struck out three batters.
 
16564The Rock fired the first shot in the contest, scoring on a Caitlin Baxter RBI single up the middle to take an early 1-0 lead.
 
Back-to-back singles from Brooke Callaghan and Olivia Jankowski had the Fighting Scots in business to start the bottom of the fourth. Both Callaghan and Jankowski advanced on back-to-back wild pitches, allowing Callaghan to knot the game up at 1-1. Following a Claire Johnston walk, a double steal allowed Jankowski to take home and give Edinboro the lead for good before Sallot's run made it 3-1.
 
The Rock could muster up just one more run on a Hannah Nestor pinch hit RBI single in the top of the sixth as the Fighting Scots held on to win. The Rock threatened to tie in the top of the seventh, but a great play on a roller by Allocco at third closed the door.
 
Callaghan was 2-for-3 in the contest. Jankowski and Jessica Hyland were both 1-for-3.
 
Carly DeRose (3-7) took the loss for The Rock, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits, walking four and striking out two.
 
Game Two – Slippery Rock 3, Edinboro 2 (8)
Slippery Rock's errors continued in the second contest, but didn't prove as costly as it was The Rock that pulled out a 3-2 win in extra innings.
The Rock once again scored first on a Baxter RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
 
The Fighting Scots knotted it up in the bottom of the fourth as Callaghan scored from first on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 1-1.
 
Slippery Rock broke the tie the next inning on a Lauren Hawley RBI double to left to take a 2-1 lead, but the Fighting Scots continued to scrap, tying it up in the sixth inning at 2-2. Callaghan stole second and once again came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
 
After a quiet seventh inning, the contest shifted to extras with The Rock scoring the winning run in the top of the eighth on an Allie Fischer RBI double. 16656
 
Amanda Metz (4-2) took the loss for the Fighting Scots, giving up two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings work in relief of starter Kalet Lenart. Metz also fanned five batters in the contest.
 
Brooke Dawson (7-6) went the distance for The Rock, giving up two runs on five hits and also striking out five.
 
Callaghan was 2-for-4 in the contest. Victoria Allocco was 1-for-3. Heh and Claire Johnston were both 1-for-4.
