Seniors Swing for the Fences as Fighting Scots Split with Local PSAC Rival Mercyhurst on Senior Day

EDINBORO, Pa.  – The Edinboro University softball team exploded for a season-high 18 runs in the season finale as they split a doubleheader with PSAC West rival Mercyhurst on a cold and dreary Saturday afternoon. The 18 runs are the most since the 2014 squad also plated 14 in a victory over Coker. With the split, the Fighting Scots conclude the season 16-21 overall and 7-13 in the PSAC West while Mercyhurst ends the year 16-30-1 and 7-13, respectively.

Prior to the doubleheader the Fighting Scots honored nine departing seniors that took the field one last time at Edinboro. Brooke Callaghan, Theresa Fleckenstein, Jessica Hyland, Claire Johnston, Kalet Lenart, MaryLouise Lindner, Heather Tighe, Abby Sotter and Samantha Weaver were all celebrated in the festivities.

All six position players accounted for at least one RBI in the doubleheader and finished the contests a combined 23-for-47 with seven homers and 22 RBIs. All three pitchers saw action in the circle.

Game One – Mercyhurst 15, Edinboro 7 (6 Inn.)
Despite battling through injured ribs for a majority of the season, Sotter got the start in the circle one final time and threw a strike past leadoff hitter Rachel DiBartolomeo to conclude her Edinboro career. Lenart came in for Sotter and pitched the remainder of the contest.

DiBartolomeo opened the scoring with a solo shot to straight away center and the Lakers took advantage of a pair of Edinboro miscues to score five more runs in the opening inning and take an early 6-0 lead.

The Mercyhurst lead grew to 7-0 in the top of the second following another Edinboro error that allowed Cassandra Egelston to score.

The Fighting Scots began to chip away at the early defecit in the home half of the second Tighe doubled to left center before Hyland's first home run of the game made it 7-2.

The Lakers' lead back up to 11-1 in the top of the fourth inning as DiBartolomeo led off the inning with her second homer of the contest. Meg Maranto drove in a run before Julia Lang delivered a two-run single.

Olivia Jankowski led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the right field line and was brought home on a Tighe single that rocketed off the pitcher's leg to make it 11-3.

In the very next inning Danna Heh reached safely to lead off the inning and came around to score on a Theresa Fleckenstein single that got away from the left fielder. Emily Osterberg pinch ran for Fleckenstein and was brought home on a Jankowski RBI to make it 11-5.

The Lakers lead grew right back up to 15-5 in the top of the sixth with the big hit coming on a two-run double by DiBartolomeo.
Tighe led off the bottom of the sixth with a single setting up Hyland's second two-run blast of the contest to make it 15-7. Weaver pinch hit in the inning, nearly beating out a grounder to the second baseman but the Lakers held on to win in six innings.

Lenart (6-8) took the loss for the Fighting Scots.

Anna Cochis (8-10) picked up the win for the Lakers, giving up seven runs (five earned) on ten hits in six complete innings.

Hyland finished the contest 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs, her second multi-homer game of the season. Tighe was 3-for-3 with an RBI while Heh and Fleckenstein were both 2-for-4.

DiBartolomeo finished the opening game 4-for-5 with a home run and for RBIs. Lang was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Game Two – Edinboro 18, Mercyhurst 11
In the second game it was the Fighting Scots that wasted no time building a giant lead in the early going. Edinboro went out with bang, exploding for six home runs in the contest. The contest was highlighted by Johnston's three home run, nine RBI performance. Both figures are career-highs.

Johnston's day got started in the first inning, batting in her first run of the contest to make it 1-0.

The Lakers brought one across in the top of the second to knot the game up at 1-1, but the tie was quickly broken.

Hyland led off the home half of the second with a double and stole third to set up Lindner's RBI single. Three straight singles from Heh, Fleckenstein and an RBI single from Callaghan made it 2-1 with the bases loaded. The bases weren't juiced for long as Johnston cleared them all with a grand slam to left, her first of three homers.

Fleckenstein joined the home run parade in the bottom of the third, bringing home Heh following a single to make it 9-1. A single by Callaghan set the stage for Johnston's second homer of the day, a two-run blast to straight away center to make it 11-1.

The Lakers scored three quick runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 11-4 and made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth at 11-10.

That was as close as the Lakers would get to sniffing the lead as Edinboro exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Fleckenstein kick started the scoring spree with a leadoff homer, her second of the day. Singles from Jankowski and Tighe set up Hyland'ss two-run double to make it 14-10. Shannon Gilbert pinch hit for Britney Allen and took the first pitch she saw all the way over the right field fence to make it 16-10.

The Lakers made it 16-11 on a Meridith Grimes RBI single in the top of the sixth, but Johnston wasn't done just yet.

Following a Jankowski single, Johnston roped her third home run of the day over the left field fence to make it 18-11.

Weaver (2-2) picked up her second straight victory, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits. Kerri Stevens came in and recorded her second save of the season, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up just one run on three hits.

Nye (7-14) took the loss for the Lakers, giving up seven runs on six hits in just 1.2 innings work.

All in all, Johnston finished the contest 3-for-5 with three homers and nine RBIs. Hyland was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Fleckenstein was 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs, the second two home run game of her career. Callaghan was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Lindner was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
