Edinboro Concludes Trip To Oklahoma With 19-16 Loss To Sooners

NORMAN, Okla. – The Edinboro wrestling team dropped a 19-16 dual to Oklahoma on Saturday to conclude their trip out west. The Fighting Scots (6-5, 4-1 EWL) got five individual wins, but the Sooners held on for the victory.

#11 Sean Russell (125 lbs.), #16 Korbin Myers (133), Andrew Shomers (157 lbs.), Zach Ancewicz (184 lbs.), and #14 Billy Miller (285 lbs.) all earned wins against Oklahoma. The Sooners (8-9, 3-5 Big 12) held on for the win despite dropping two of the last three duals.

Russell got things started off at 125 lbs. in the lone dual with two nationally-ranked wrestlers. Russell used two takedowns and two nearfall points in the first period to take the lead over No. 16 Christian Moody. After three periods, Russell tallied more than a minute of riding time to secure the 10-5 decision win.

Adding to the Edinboro lead, Myers jumped out 4-1 after one period at 133 lbs. over Jake Rubio. Rubio would score two points in the second period, but it was Myers five that increased the Fighting Scot lead. After three, Myers claimed the 12-3 major decision, extending Edinboro's lead over Oklahoma to 7-0.

The Sooners used major decisions of their own at 141 and 149 lbs. to take the dual lead at 8-7. Andrew Shomers and Justin Thomas wrestled even through the first period of their 157 lbs. bout. After a Thomas escape, Shomers would use a takedown in the second period to lead 2-1. Much like the first, the two wrestlers couldn't find the points in the third with Shomers holding on for the 2-1 decision and giving Edinboro the lead once more, 10-8, going into the break.

After picking up two wins at 165 and 174 lbs., the Sooners took the 15-10 lead heading into 184 lbs. Ancewicz trailed Matt Waddell 1-0 after two periods, but he used an escape early and followed up with a takedown with less than 30 seconds left to earn the 3-1 victory, cutting the Oklahoma lead to two, 15-13.

Despite Miller picking up a 4-0 decision over Connor Webb at 285 lbs., the Sooners held on for the 19-16 win.

Edinboro will host West Virginia on Thursday, February 15. The Fighting Scots will honor the seniors before the dual, which starts at 7:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
