BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- For the six-straight season, the Edinboro men's tennis team has advanced to the PSAC Championship match after a 5-1 win over third-seeded Kutztown in the semifinals. The second seeded Fighting Scots will face-off against Mercyhurst for the second straight season.
A year ago, the Lakers defeated Edinboro 5-4 to win their first PSAC title.Â
Against Kutztown, Edinboro got things started off quickly in doubles, taking a 2-1 lead. Seniors
Vitor Albanese and
Daniel Fernandez started off with an 8-3 win over Nikolay Kodinov and Nolan Perugini at the top doubles spot. Not to be outdone,
Kevin Mboko and
Mauricio Santos won by an identicial 8-3 score over Martin Munoz and Gabriel Souza at number three doubles. The Golden Bears got on the board with an 8-3 win at number two doubles.
Needing just a split in singles, the Fighting Scots instead got straight-set victories from the top three spots in the lineup to secure the win.
Vitor Albanese won his 101st career singles match with a 6-2, 6-4 over Munoz at the top spot with his double partner Fernandez winning 6-4, 6-3 over Perugini at number two.
Mateus Santos, who retired from the regular season match up with the Kutztown, clinched the win with his 7-5, 6-2 victory over Kodinov.Â
The remaining three matches were left unfinished as the match had already been decided.
Edinboro will face off against top-seed Mercyhurst in the final after the Lakers defeated Bloomsburg 5-0 in the other semi-final. The championship match will be played Saturday, April 21 at noon. Fans can watch a livestream of the match through the Bloomsburg athletic website
