Jankowski's Longball Not Enough as Edinboro Drops a Pair to California(PA)

EDINBORO, Pa. – Playing their third doubleheader in three days, the Edinboro softball team dropped a pair of contests to California(Pa.) on Monday afternoon by scores of 9-1 and 12-4, both coming in five innings. The contest was played at Edinboro, but the Vulcans were the home team. Cal's field is being renovated this year. The two will meet again next Monday, April 30 with Edinboro the home team.

The losses drop Edinboro to 5-20 overall and 1-11 in PSAC West action. California(Pa.) improved to 14-12 over and 8-4 in league play.

The Fighting Scots are in the midst of a stretch of seven doubleheaders in ten days. The good news is they will play just once in the next three days, a doubleheader at Mercyhurst on Wednesday, April 25.

GAME 1:  California(Pa.) 9, Edinboro 1 (5 innings)
Emilee Downing held Edinboro to two hits and struck out ten in five innings to lead the Vulcans to the game one victory. Cal opened up a five-run lead in the first inning, all the runs unearned. Kaylyn Roose hit a three-run homer. Edinboro pushed a run across in the top of the second on a solo runner by Brittany Allen, her second of the year. Cal would score two unearned runs in the third and two more in the fourth.  Danna Heh accounted for Edinboro's other hit. Kerry Stevens (1-7) went the distance, allowing just two earned runs.

GAME 2:  California(Pa.) 12, Edinboro 4 (5 innings)
Edinboro opened the game with three runs as Danna Heh reached on an infield single and Lauren Gierlak on an error. One out later, Olivia Jankowski poked her second home run of the season for a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, Cal answered with seven runs in the bottom of the frame on five hits, three errors and a pair of hit batters. The Vulcans added five runs in the bottom of the fourth, four scoring on Abby Sachse's grand slam. Edinboro tried to rally in the top of the fifth, with Victoria Allocco and Heh hitting singles. Shannon Gilbert drove in a run with a single up the middle, but the game ended on a strikeout, with Taylor Robblee coming in to get the final strike. Amanda Metz (2-6) took the loss for Edinboro, tossing a complete game.
