FAIRFAX, Va. – The Edinboro wrestling team dropped in their final road dual of the season at George GMU on Sunday, 20-19.
Richie Gomez (133 lbs.),
Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.),
Jacob Oliver (174 lbs.),
Zach Ancewicz (184 lbs.) and
Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) all picked up wins for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro will return to George Mason for the EWL Championships on March 9.
Richie Gomez picked up a forfeit win at 133 lbs. as the Patriots did not send out a wrestler. With the win Gomez improved to 11-19 this season.
Hoehn picked up two takedowns and two nearfall points to jump out to a 6-1 lead after one period over Colston DiBlasi. A take down and another two nearfall points in the second staked the redshirt junior to a 10-2 lead. DiBlasi chose down to start the third, but Hoehn used a reversal and picked up a riding time point to earn the 13-3 major decision. Hoehn improves to 8-5 on the season.
Oliver led 2-1 over Neil Schuster thanks to a takedown after one period. Choosing down to start the second, Oliver used an escape to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Schuster pulled even in the third with a penalty point and an escape. With under a minute left Oliver earned a takedown and two nearfall points to take the lead 7-3. With just over a minute of riding time, Oliver picked up the 8-4 decision. Oliver, currently ranked 27 in the first NCAA Coaches Rankings improved to 23-4 on the season.
At 184 lbs., Ancewicz had a 2-0 lead over Paul Pierce after one period after a takedown. Seven total points were scored in the second period between the two with Ancewicz picking up two takedowns and a penalty point to lead 7-2 heading into the final period. Ancewicz chose down to start and got an escape and held on for the 9-4 decision. He is now 16-12 this year.
Reynolds improved his team leading wins to 25 after picking up a 4-2 decision over Eli Spencer. A takedown and two nearfall points by Reynolds were all the points score through the first two periods. After Spencer used an escape in the third, Reynolds held of for the 4-2 margin. He currently 25-9 on the season.
The Fighting Scots (3-5, 2-2 EWL) return home for their final three duals of the season starting when Lock Haven visits McComb Fieldhouse on Thursday, January 31. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
