  • The Short Story:  Vicente Arriagada drilled a 35-yard field goal as time expired to provide Edinboro to its first win of the season. The redshirt freshmen made three field goals in all, the others covering 46 and 25 yards, with his third of the day setting off a wild celebration. The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 17-8 early in the third quarter, but the defense held Gannon scoreless the rest of the way. Edinboro would close the gap to 17-15 in the final minute of the third quarter as quarterback Jordan Castelli drive the Fighting Scots 74 yards. The last four yards went to Ta'Nauz Gregory for his 30th career touchdown reception. The winning drive was set up by a defensive stand that forced a punt with 3:02 remaining. Edinboro took over at the Gannon 46 and picked up a pair of first down to reach the GU 17. With three seconds remaining, Arriagada came in and hit the game-winning three-pointer as the clock hit :00's. Edinboro won for the first time at Gannon since 2011.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game got off to an odd start, in a good way for Edinboro. Gannon's Jaylen Johnson had trouble picking up the opening kickoff. When he finally did, he was hit by Anthony Medicino and fumbled. Johnson would recovery the ball in the end zone for a safety. Edinboro held a 2-0 lead just eight seconds into the contest.
  • Edinboro forced another turnover on Gannon's next possession. The Golden Knights drove from their own one to midfield, but Carlos Gomez fumbled when hit by Brandon Anderson, and Tarique Smith recovered at the GU 43. An unnecessary roughness penalty after the play moved the ball back to the EU 42. The Fighting Scots would pick up three first downs, two on third down, before the drive stalled at the GU 29. Vicente Arriagada came in and made a 46-yard field goal to boost the lead to 5-0 with 5:02 left in the first quarter. It marked the longest field goal by an Edinboro kicker since Austin Reese's 47-yarder in 2016.
  • Gannon answred with a 7-play, 62-yard drive to take the lead at 7-5 with 2:31 to play in the first quarter. The drive featured four plays of 10-or-more yards, the last a 20-yard pass from Jimmy Keefe to Sam East for the touchdown.
  • The two teams would trade field goals in the second quarter. Gannon moved ahead 10-5 after an Edinboro interception. A.J. Satcher returned the pickoff 21 yards to the EU 33. The first play of the drive resulted in a 14-yard pass completion, but the Golden Knights would manage just three yards on the next three plays by the stingy Edinboro defense. Eric Scarpino converted on a 34-yard field goal with 8:16 left in the half.
  • Edinboro responded with a 12-play, 64-yard march that began with runs of 12 and 16 yards by Dorian Woody. The freshman running back would carry six times for 36 yards in the drive, and Jordan Castelli connected with Andre Dowdell Jr. for nine yards on a key 3rd-and-3 play. Edinboro would reach the GU 27 before Arriagad came in to attempt a 44-yard field goal. His kick was wide left, but Gannon was called for a personal foul, extending the drive. The Fighting Scots picked up just five more yards, but Arriagada was called upon again,. And this time made a 25-yard field goal. That made it 10-8 with 3:30 left in the half, and that's how the half would end.
  • Gannon appeared to take control of the game after its first possession of the third quarter. The Golden Knights needed just five plays to march 80 yards and take a 17-8 lead with 10:53 left in the third quarter. An unsportsmanlike penalty call against Edinboro kept the drive along, and Gomez covered the final 49 yards on a 3rd-and-1 play. He bounced the run outside, later shook off a pair of tacklers, then dragged several Fighting Scots into the end zone.
  • An inspired Edinboro defense would limit Gannon to just five first downs the rest of the way. The Fighting Scots would close the gap to 17-15 with just 40 seconds left in the third quarter, as Castelli guided them on a 74-yard drive that took just four plays. The redshirt sophomore, replacing injured starter Andrew Tomko, completed back-to-back 35-yard passes, the first to Dowdell and the second to Ta'Nauz Gregory. Gregory gave Edinboro a 1st-and-goal at the GU 4, and on the next play the two hooked up again, with Gregory making a diving grab in the front right corner of the end zone the four-yard TD reception.
  • The fourth quarter featured punts and penalties, with Gannon punting on all four possessions. The last one by Isaac West covered just 30 yards to the GU 46 after the Edinbioro defense, plus a holding penalty, stunted the Gannon possession.
  • The game-winning drive started with 3:02 remaining on the clock, and began with a 10-yard pass from Castelli-to-Woody. Castelli added a seven-yard pass to Kahlil Jackson, the sophomore's lone catch of the day on the next play, then kept the ball for eight yards to the GU 21. Edinboro eventually reached the GU 16, with both teams using timeouts. Edinboro called one with three seconds remaining to set up for the game-winning field goal. Luke Rowlands' snap was true, Levi Becker with the hold, and Arriagada's 35-yard kick was between the uprights for the 18-17 win.
