Trio of Defenders Star but Edinboro Ends Season with Tough 20-17 Loss at Bloomsburg

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Bloomsburg 20, Edinboro 17
  • Records:  Edinboro (3-8), Bloomsburg (5-6)
  • Location:  Bloomsburg, Pa. – Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium
  • The Short Story:  For the second time this season, Bloomsburg rallied for a win in the fourth quarter against the Fighting Scots. And for the second time, it was a penalty-infested contest, with 28 total penalties for over 260 yards. Edinboro was whistled for a school-record 19 penalties. One of those came back to haunt the Fighting Scots, as a targeting penalty on the final drive gave the Huskies the ball deep in Edinboro territory. Logan Leiby would sneak in from a yard out with 28 seconds remaining for the winning score. Up until allowing the Huskies to drive 87 yards in the final four minutes Up until that point the Edinboro defense had turned in a brilliant effort. In fact, it was the defense that gave Edinboro a 17-13 lead early in the third quarter. Aaron Rogers intercepted a Leiby pass and returned it 52 yards for his second pick-six of the season. Bloomsburg jumped out to a 10-0 lead and would lead 13-3 at the half. Edinboro's lone score was a 35-yard field goal by Vicente Arriagada, setting the school record with his 16th successful field goal of the season. Edinboro pulled to within 13-10 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Levi Becker to Andre Dowdell. It was the first career touchdown pass for the senior wide receiver. The Edinboro defense sacked Leiby 10 times, with four by Gilberto Ortiz II.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bloomsburg took the opening kickoff and put together an impressive 10-play, 73-yard drive that ate up 7 minutes, 22 seconds. Khalil nelson got the drive started with runs of 12 and 17 yards, then Logan Leiby took over, completing three passes for 26 yards. Leiby's pass to Nyfease West carried to the EU 1, and two plays later West scored on a two-yard run for the 7-0 lead.
  • The teams would exchange interceptions later in the first quarter, with the Edinboro turnover leading to a Bloomsburg field goal. The Huskies would twice convert on 3rd-and-1 and would reach the EU 5. A penalty and a Gilberto Ortiz II sack of Leiby pushed Bloomsburg back, and Colton Shollenberger came in and converted on a 30-yard field goal with 10:32 left in the second quarter for a 10-0 lead.
  • The two teams would exchange field goals the rest of the half. Edinboro would score following the Bloomsburg three-pointer. Jordan castelli came in at quarterback and completed a 15-yard pass to Jon Long, along with runs of 9 and 16 yards. The Fighting Scots' drive would stall at the BU 17. Vicente Arriagada came in and booted a 35-yard field goal with 4;47 left to make it 10-3. It was the 16th field goal for the redshirt freshman, a new school record.
  • The Huskies responded with a three-pointer of their own as the half ended. They drobe 55 yards on 12 plays. The drive was aided by three Edinboro penalties for first downs, including a holding call that gave Bloomsburg a first down at the six. The defense denied the Huskies six points, as Joshua Boyd and Ortiz both recorded sacks. Shollenberger came in and kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired for a 13-3 Bloomsburg lead at the half.
  • Edinboro would come alive in the third quarter with a pair of scores in the first four minutes. Starting quarterback Levi Becker returned to start the period and led a quick three-play, 75-yard drive. Becker hit Ta'Nauz Gregory for 43 yards on the first play, followed by a 15-yard hookup to Jake Cervik, with the big tight end hurdling a would-be tackler to the BU 17. On the next play, Becker found Andre Dowdell open over the middle, with the senior wide receiver completing a 17-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career.
  • Bloomsburg would get one first down on its next possession, but Leiby would throw an interception three plays later. Aaron Rogers would pick off the pass at the EU 48 and take it back 52 yards for his second pick six of the season and the fifth touchdown by the defense this year. Vicente Arriagada's extra point gave Edinboro a 17-13 lead with 11:25 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Edinboro had an opportunity to build the lead to seven midway through the fourth quarter as the Scots drove to the BU 18 before the drive stalled. It featured a 30-yard pass from Castelli to Gregory. Arriagada's 34-yard attempt was wide left.
  • For the second time in the game, the two teams exchanged interceptions, this time on consecutive plays. Leiby's tipped pass was hauled in by Brandon Anderson at the BU 45. But on the very next play, Becker's long pass was picked off by Logan Yohn, with Bloomsburg taking over at its own 13.
  • The Huskies proceeded to drive 87 yards on 12 plays. The key play was a potential 11th sack of Leiby, who instead evaded the rush and scrambled for 14 yards. He was then hit on his slide, with Edinboro being called for targeting. The ensuing 15-yard penalty moved the ball to the EU 30. Three plays later on 3rd-and-12, Leiby found Duffy Gilhool wide open down the middle for 25 yards to the seven. He burrowed into the end zone from a yard out on 3rd-and-goal with 28 seconds remaining.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • As was the case all year, the Edinboro offense struggled to move the ball while the defense limited the opponent. A banged-up Fighting Scots offense finished with 213 yards, with just 50 yards on the ground. Bloomsburg would finish with 347 yards despite holding incredible margins of 79 to 34 in plays and 42:23 to 17:37 in time of possession. Both teams were guilty of three interceptions.
  • In the first meeting in the second game of the year, the two teams combined for 19 penalties for 200 yards. Edinboro managed that almost by itself, totaling a school-record 19 penalties for 167 yards. Bloomsburg added 9 penalties for 94 yards.
  • The Edinboro defense fell one sack short of a school record with 10. Gilberto Ortiz II led the way with four sacks, as he ended with 8 tackles and 4.5 TFL. Aaron Rogers had a pair of interceptions, returning the second 52 yards for a touchdown. Brandon Anderson led the defense with 12 tackles, an interception, and a pair of passes broken up. Connor Kelly added 9 tackles, with 2 TFL and a sack.
  • Levi Becker and Jordan Castelli shared quarterbacking duties. Becker completed 7-of-13 passes for 109 yards with a touchdown, but threw 3 INTs. Castelli completed 3-of-4 passes for 54 yards and ran for 21 yards. Ta'nauz Gregory caught 5 passes for 93 yards.
  • The running game, with leading rushers Dorian Woody and CJ Reyes-Diggs unabailable, was pretty much non-existent. Senior Alvin Lara made his first career start and ran for 26 yards on seven carries.
  • Bloomsburg finished with a balanced attack, with 192 yards passing and 155 yards rushing. Logan Leiby completed 18-of-33 passes for 192 yards but also threw 3 INTs. He added the winning touchdown rushing. Duffy Gilhool caught 7 passes for 67 yards. Like Edinboro, Bloomsburg has battled injuries and they lost leading receiver Michael Allen during the game. He caught just one pass. Khalil Nelson ran for 128 yards on 16 carries.
RECORD BOOK
  • Vicente Arriagada broke the Edinboro record for field goals as the redshirt freshman made a 35-yarder for his 16th of the season. That is one more than Rich Ruskiewicz in 1982. He would make 16-of-20 on the season.
  • Redshirt senior strong safety Brandon Anderson moved into the top ten in career tackles two weeks ago, and wrapped up his career in ninth place with 353 career stops. He led the team in tackles for the third straight year with 100, becoming the first Edinboro player to lead Edinboro in tackles three straight years for the first time since 1998. Dan Caro was the last player to do it.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory wrapped up his career holding several records. After hauling in 5 passes for 93 yards, the senior wide receiver ended his career with 234 career receptions for 3,261 yards, both school records. He ended tied for the career lead in receiving TDs (35), and boosted his kickoff return yards record to 2,146. Finally, Gregory finished his career with 5,796 career all-purpose yards, good for second all-time. He finished sixth in career punt return yards with 328. For the season, Gregory totaled 67 catches for 931 yards with 7 TDs. The 67 catches is fourth in a season, while the 931 yards ranks seventh.
