Edinboro Finishes Eighth at NIWBT National Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team wrapped up competition at the 42ndAnnual NIWBT National Championships on Friday with a pair of losses to finish eighth. The Fighting Scots suffered a 70-60 setback to Southwest Minnesota State in the morning, then fell 56-50 in the seventh place game to Nebraska-Omaha.
The Fighting Scots, seeded fifth in the tournament, ended the season at 18-18.  
    
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 70, EDINBORO 60
For the second straight game, the Fighting Scots fell victim to a hot-shooting team. Southwest Minnesota State would shoot 60.8 percent for the game, including 66.7 percent in the second half (14-of-21). Despite the torrid shooting for SMSU, the Fighting Scots nearly rallied in the final 20 minutes as they hit 18-of-32 shots (56.3 pct.) themselves in the second half. SMSU led 37-23 at the half as Edinboro shot 38.5 percent (10-of-26). SMSU used a 16-2 run to build a 29-16 lead with just under four minutes left. The deficit was still 51-37 with 12:11 remaining when Edinboro would pull back into the contest. Seven straight points cut the margin in half at 51-44, as Kevin Atherley scored on a layup, followed by back-to-back buckets by Jacob Spiller, and a free throw by Cor'Rales Dupree. SMSU would boost the lead back up to 14 points seven minutes later at 66-52. Edinboro got no closer than nine points the rest of the way. Spillers led three Fighting Scots in double figures with 20 points, making 9-of-15 field goals and 2-of-3 free throws. Atherley chipped in with 16 points (8-of-16 FGs) and nine rebounds, while Dupree came off the bench to contribute 12 points and six boards. He made 5-of-9 shots. Chayse Wolf had eight points and six assists.

NEBRASKA-OMAHA 56, EDINBORO 50
The Fighting Scots led early but Nebraska-Omaha slowly pulled away in the first half and would lead by nine at 32-23 at the half.  For the third game in the tournament, the Fighting Scots fell victim to a hot-shooting squad, an UNO shot 61.9 percent in the half (13-of-21). Edinboro, meanwhile, came in at 34.4 percent (11-of-32). UNO pushed the lead to 12 points at 38-26 with 17:22 to play, but the Fighting Scots would stage a rally. A 19-8 run, with six points from Kevin Atherley and five from Jacob Spillers, pulled Edinboro to within 46-45 with 6:09 remaining. UNO would go on a 9-2 run to take a 55-47 lead with just 20 seconds left. Edinboro would score just one basket over a span of six minutes before Chayse Wolf hit a three with just 10 seconds remaining. Edinboro ended the night shooting 37.1 percent (23-of-62) and went to the free throw line just twice, making one. UNO cooled off in the second half but still shot 54.8 percent overall (23-of-42), while making 9-of-14 free throws. Spillers led three players in double figures with 15 points, adding nine rebounds. Wolf had 14 points, and Atherley finished with a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, adding five steals.
