WILSON, N. C. --
Mauricio Santos won in both singles and doubles, but it was not enough as the Edinboro men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision on the road to Barton. The loss was the Fighting Scots (5-1) first defeat of the season. The match was part of the team's annual spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Barton is coached by former Edinboro head coach Lee Underwood.
Mauricio Santos teamed up with
Mateus Santos for a easy 6-0 win over Alessandro Gerbino and Hugh Ryder at number three doubles. The Bulldogs claimed wins at the top two spots to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Barton clinched the win after picking up wins at number two, three and five singles. With the match decided and after splitting sets, Maurcio Santos and Gerbino played a match tiebreak in leu of a third set. Santos came away with the 11-9 tiebreak win to put Edinboro on the board with the 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (11-0) win.
The Fighting Scots will hit the courts again tomorrow, Sunday, March 3 when they take on West Liberty in Hilton Head.
