Memorable Season Comes to an End for Fighting Scots at PSAC Tournament

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday morning with an 11-2 loss to Shippensburg in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament. The loss concluded one of the most successful seasons in years for the Fighting Scots, as head coach Dan Gierlak's team finished with a 22-19 record. That came after the Fighting Scots won just six games the year before and were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West. Shippensburg, the number two seed in the PSAC Central, moves on with a 25-21 record.

The 22 wins are the most since the 2015 team won 23 games. They are also the third-highest win total in Gierlak's 30 seasons as head coach. Edinboro was making its first appearance in the PSAC Tournament since 2014.

For the third straight game, the Fighting Scots found themselves trailing in the first inning. Shippensburg opened the top of the first with a groundout, but the Raiders then loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, single, and another hit by pitch. Grace Palmieri would clear the bases with her first home run of the season, a grand slam to right field.

Shippensburg would add three more runs on three hits in the second inning to go ahead 7-0. Morgan DeFeo and Hannah Marsteller provided the big hits with RBI doubles, and Palmieri capped the inning with a run-scoring single.
The Fighting Scots scored both of their runs in the bottom of the second.  Taryn Wilson struck out the first two batters, but Jessica Little walked and Abby Sallot reached on an error. Danna Heh would walk to load the bases, and Lauren Gierlak followed with a two-run single to right center. That signaled a pitching change for the Raiders, with Tressa Kagarise (12-7) replacing Wilson. She immediately hit Olivia Jankowski with her first pitch to reload the bases, but would end the inning with a strikeout.

The Raiders regained one of the runs in the top of the fourth as Marsteller hit her second run-scoring double with two outs to make it 8-2. The lead grew to 11-2 in the top of the fifth as Shippensburg pushed across three more runs. The big blow was a two-run double by Courtney Coy.

Jankowski opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single. The senior wrapped up one of the top seasons ever by a Fighting Scot with a .479 batting average, the second-highest in a season.  Unfortunately, Gilbert lined back to the pitcher for a double play and the Boro was unable to rally in the fifth.

Shippensburg finished with 11 hits compared to three for the Fighting Scots. Gierlak had two of those hits in three at bats, with Jankowski accounting for the other.

Jankowski and Heh led a group of 12 seniors who concluded their careers in the PSAC Tournament. Heh hit .421 for the season, which ranks ninth. She set the season record for steals in a season on Wednesday night, ending the year with 27. She scored 36 runs, which ranks second in a season, and her 59 hits is also second, one shy of the school record. Jankowski finished with 56 hits, which is fourth in a season. She set a school record with 13 doubles, and finished second in a season with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs

Amanda Metz started and picked up the loss to finish at 6-12. Carley Nasca threw the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of earned runs with three strikeouts. Nasca finished the year with a 16-7 record.  The two senior hurlers combined to throw all but 1.1 innings for the Scots this season. Both broke the previous record for appearances in a season, with Nasca now holding the record with 37 and Metz second with 35. With 16 wins, Nasca fell one win shy of the school record. Metz, meanwhile, set a school record for saves with five.
