Hagan Celebrates Senior Day with Win as Edinboro Edged by Clarion, 17-16

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team wrapped up its 2019-20 dual season on Sunday afternoon with a 17-16 loss to Clarion on Senior Day at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots finish at 10-10 overall and 3-6 vs. Mid-American Conference teams, while Clarion is now 10-6 and 7-4, respectively. Both teams will now get ready to compete in the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 7-8 in DeKalb, Illinois.

The back-and-forth match ultimately saw Edinboro undone with a forfeit at 133 lbs. The match started at 149 lbs., and that forfeit left Edinboro trailing 17-13. Nate Hagan, who was recognized in pre-match ceremonies along with fellow seniors Koltyn Eason, Michael Resignalo, Dylan Reynolds, and Cullen Wolford, would register a solid 8-2 decision over Seth Koleno at 141 lbs., but the decision left Edinboro a point shy.

Hagan improved to 11-8 with the win. He used a first period takedown and a second period escape for a 3-0 lead, then added two takedowns in the third period.

Nate Hagan vs. ClarionReynolds was the other senior in the Edinboro lineup, as he faced 13th-ranked Greg Bulsak at 197 lbs. Reynolds had upset Bulsak last year, 2-1, at the EWL Championships, and looked primed to do so again. A takedown midway through the second period gave Reynolds a 4-1 lead. An escape, followed by a takedown with 19 seconds left in the second period knotted the score at 4-4 heading into the third period. Bulska would account for all the scoring in the third with an escape and a takedown, along with riding time for an 8-4 decision. Reynolds is now 17-11 while Bulsak improved to 22-5.

Two other ranked wrestlers took the mat on Sunday. The match got underway at 149 lbs., with Tyler Vath (12-13) opposing 12th-ranked Brock Zacherl (20-3). The two were tied at 1-1 when Zacherl recorded the winning takedown in a 3-1 decision with 15 seconds remaining.

Jacob Oliver was impressive in his match against Max Wohlabaugh. The redshirt sophomore came in ranked 16th at 174 lbs. An early takedown left him trailing 2-0. Oliver held a slim 5-4 advantage heading into the third period, but he would dominate the final two minutes with three takedowns to go on to win by major decision, 15-6.

Oliver has now won 12 straight matches to improve to 22-4 on the season. Today's win was the 50th of his career as he improves to 50-11 in two seasons.

That victory gave Edinboro a 7-6 lead, and the lead would grow to 10-6 with redshirt freshman Cody Mulligan's (17-11) 4-2 decision over Mike Vernagallo at 184 lbs.

After Bulsak pulled Clarion to within 10-9, Jon Spaulding boosted Edinboro's margin back to 13-9. The junior won a 3-1 decision over Tyler Bagoly (16-5) in a matchup of two top-four heavyweights in the MAC. Spaulding, ranked second, trailed 1-0 entering the third period to Bagoly, who is tied for fourth in the MAC. Spaulding had a 1:11 advantage in riding time entering the final period. He chose neutral, and would register the deciding takedown with 13 seconds left. He now has a 24-8 record, leading the team in wins.

Clarion's Jake Gromacki (10-6) won his eighth straight match with a 3-0 decision over Lucas Rodriguez (14-13) at 125 lbs., pulling Clarion to within 13-11 after the deduction of a point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the match. The 133 lb. forfeit pushed Clarion ahead 17-13.

The two teams would split the ten matches. Peter Pappas claimed the other win for Edinboro, as he got the Fighting Scots on the board with a 10-6 decision over Joe Sliwoski at 157 lbs. Pappas would have four takedowns while improving to 16-13.
