Fighting Scots Celebrate Senior Day Following Final Doubleheader vs. Kutztown

WINTER HAVEN, Fl. --- Saturday's doubleheader in Florida was greatly different than expected a few days ago. For one, the Edinboro softball team was supposed to play Jefferson and Palm Beach Atlantic. But more importantly, the two fill-in games against PSAC foe Kutztown signaled not only the end to the spring trip, but the end of the 2020 season.

Due to the PSAC's announcement on Friday that all spring sports would be canceled effective March 15 due to the coronavirus, Edinboro was forced to hold its senior day much earlier than anticipated, and over 1,100 miles away from the Edinboro campus, without its home fans to honor the seniors one last time.

Head coach Dan Gierlak held makeshift senior day festivities at the conclusion of the doubleheader. He honored three seniors – Shannon Gilbert, Jolene Teller, and Lauren Gierlak, his daughter. Following a presentation of gifts, the three seniors followed a Fighting Scot tradition and ran the bases one last time.

With a roster of 17 freshmen and just the three seniors, the Fighting Scots finished their trip to Florida with a 0-12 record following 5-3 and 7-4 losses to Kutztown. As the week went on it was clearly evident that the Fighting Scots were improving daily. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until next year to see the improvement in the team.

KUTZTOWN 5, EDINBORO 3
The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Lauren Gierlak stroked a leadoff double to right center and scored on Jolene Teller's two-out single. Kutztown answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Amber Brugger drove in two with a double. Edinboro narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a run in the top of the third courtesy of a grounder by Teller. She drove in freshman Camryn Billig, who doubled with one out. The Golden Bears would boost their lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Teller closed the gap to 5-3 with a single plating Gierlak, who had singled, but Teller was stranded on second. Freshman Macy Sral went the distance in the circle, scattering 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Teller would finish 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, while Gierlak was 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.

KUTZTOWN 7, EDINBORO 4
Following a scoreless first inning, the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Edinboro answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on Maya Kozup's single up the middle. Kutztown would score three times on five hits in the third inning, and two more times in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. Mackenzie Quider would double to left center to drive in pinch runner Mackenzie Brock in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-2. Kutztown made it 7-2 in the top of the fifth. Edinboro would rally with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Bridget Bailey came in to strike out the last batter with runners on first and second to halt the rally. Shannon Gilbert drove in one run with a single to right field, and Camryn Billig singled up the middle to plate the second run. Gilbert and Billig each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kutztown ended the year at 16-7.
