FB | RECAP | Balanced offensive production, special teams boost Fighting Scots in Homecoming loss to Slippery Rock

EDINBORO, Pa. – In his first start of the season for Edinboro, quarterback Isaac Bernard completed 19 passes for 127 yards and 1 TD – while the Fighting Scots kicking game continues to improve – as Edinboro (1-4, 1-2)  drops Saturday's Homecoming game to Slippery Rock (6-0, 3-0), 49-13.
 
The Fighting Scots kept on The Rock's tail in the first half, trailing just 22-10 at the half. Late in the second quarter, Bernard hit wide receiver Mike Watkins on a 7-yard touchdown to close out a tough battle in the first half.
 
Watkins led all Edinboro receivers with 3 catches for 28 yards and one TD. Edinboro's offense was a perfect 3-for-3 in red zone opportunities with one TD and two FGs.
 
Vicente Arriagada provided the final points for the Edinboro squad, hitting his second field goal of the game in the third quarter. Arriagada drilled two FGs on Saturday and nailed his only PAT attempt of the game.
 
Edinboro running back Anfreenee Williams providing the ground attack for the Fighting Scots, with 19 carries and 80 total yards. Keshawn Howard added 49 yards on the ground on just 6 carries.
 
Edinboro punter Reed Martin continued his consistent efforts on Saturday, kicking four punts for 194 yards – a 48.5 average and a long of 51. Martin also converted a fourth down on a fake punt, picking up 25 yards on the 4th-and-6 scamper.
 
On defense, Tarique Smith found his way to the quarterback with one sack for the Fighting Scots. Anthony Mendicino forced one fumble, which was recovered by Edinboro's Derian Smith.
 
Edinboro also held the advantage in total plays, 64-63, and time of position, 34:06 to 25:54.
 
Slippery Rock quarterback Andrew Koester led the offensive attack for the visitors, completing 14-of-24 passes for 266 yards and 4 TDs. Tim Smith led The Rock on the ground with 95 yards on 17 carries. Cinque Sweeting found the end zone twice on the ground for Slippery Rock.
 
This was Slippery Rock's 19th straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division win.
 
The Fighting Scots compete once again at Sox Harrison Stadium on Oct. 16, hosting cross-county rival Mercyhurst University at noon.
