Football Uses Strong First Half Out to Finish Regular Season with 42-21 Victory Over Millersville

Millersville, Pa. – The Edinboro football team scored in all three phases in the first half on their way to a 42-21 victory over host Millersville Saturday afternoon in the final game of the season.

The Fighting Scots special teams put them on the board first when Anthony Mendicino blocked the Zach Banta punt and Gage Galuska fell on the ball in the end zone with 52 seconds left to give Edinboro a 7-0 advantage.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, the offense march 53 yards in just six plays capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Bernard to Dontae Sanders to extend the lead to 14-0.

On the first play after the kickoff, Amir Walton stole the football from Millersville running back Jaheim Morris and ran it in from 20 yards out making the score 21-0 Scots with 11:00 minutes to play in the second quarter.

On the ensuing Millersville possession, the defense forced another Marauders' punt and this time CJ Waldier came up with the block giving the ball back to the offense at the Millersville 8-yardline. It took just one play, an eight-yard run by Anfreenee Williams to push the Edinboro lead to 28-0.

With 7:00 to play in the second, the defense set up the offense again when Reed Martin pounced on a fumble and returned it to the 3-yard line. A penalty on Edinboro moved the ball back to the Millersville 29, but Sanders rushed twice for 11-yards before catching a screen-pass and taking it 18 yards for the touchdown. Vincente Arriagada tacked on his fifth extra point of the half to push the lead to 35-0.

Millersville scored on their final possession of the first half to trim the lead to 35-7 at the break.

The Marauders opened the second half with an eight-play 68-yard drive to cut the lead to 35-14.

With 6:15 left in the contest Jake Stagaard ran the quarterback sneak from one yard out to pull Millersville within 14, 35-21.

Williams put the insurance score on the board when he broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run with 3:43 left in the game to set the final.

With the two blocked kicks, the Scots special teams ran their Division II best total to 12.

Bernard was an efficient 6-for-9 for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Sanders rushed for a team-high 68 yards and added two catches, both scores, for 23 yards.

Williams rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown. Jake L'Heureux added a pair of catches for a team-leading 36 yards.

Tarique Smith posted eight tackles, three for a loss, and two sacks and forced fumble. Saige Ley added eight stops as well all solo tackles including three for a loss. The Scot defense made 11 tackles for loss on the day.

"Today we played a complete game in all three phases, offense, defense and special teams," said head coach Jake Nulph. "I am extremely proud of this team and how we finished the season. Our seniors have been through a ton of adversity and I am so appreciative of everything they have done for our program."

The Scots finished the season 4-6 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC West. The win makes it three straight victories to close out the season.
