Fighting Scots Softball prepares for four game set with UPJ to begin 2021 season

Edinboro, Pa- After almost a full calendar year, the Fighting Scots softball program is back in action this weekend with a four-game set against PSAC foe Pitt-Johnstown. Edinboro last squared off on Saturday, March 14 of 2020 against Kutztown before the remainder of their season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Edinboro will begin their season with a road double-header at UPJ with games slated for Friday, March 12 at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Mountain Cats are scheduled to head to Edinboro for the final two games of the series with game times scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Pitt-Johnstown comes into action tomorrow with an 0-2 overall record after falling in both games of a double-header to Fairmont State.

The Fighting Scots feature a young team and have added thirteen first-year players this season. They also return twelve redshirt-freshman who had their initial college season cut short. The team also returns grad transfer Jolene Teller who is batting .500 in her career at Edinboro. Lauren Gierlak is also entering her fifth collegiate season overall and will be a key veteran leader in the outfield and at the dish for the team. Lauren Gierlak has played in 92 career games in her college career, including making 76 starts. Head Softball Coach Dan Gierlak remains at the helm and is in year number thirty-two as the head man for Fighting Scots softball. 
 
The Mountain Cats are led by junior Taylor Mendicino who has four hits in just eight at bats to start the season and senior Bree Ginther who has three hits in seven at-bats on the year. Edinboro has defeated UPJ in the last three matchups between the programs and lead the all-time series with five wins against the Mountain Cats to just two losses.
