Edinboro tennis programs prepares for week of PSAC play

EDINBORO, Pa. -  The Edinboro tennis programs will continue PSAC this week with a collection of matches on the women's side and a rivalry match on Saturday for the men's program.

The women's team will be playing back-to-back during the week on Tuesday, April 12 at Clarion University at 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, April 13 at home vs. IUP at 3:00 p.m. The women will cap off a full week as they travel to Mercyhurst on Friday, April 16 for a match against the Lakers scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at McDowell High School in Erie.

The women's team has been led by impressive first-year Kaede Tada (Kashiwa, Japan) who has won her last six matches for the Fighting Scots at the number one spot. Tada and her number one doubles partner Torye Calleja (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) have been playing well as a duo and have won three of their last five doubles contests, including a win against Millersville most recently.

As for Clarion, the Golden Eagles come into Tuesday's women's match with an 0-3 overall record and an identical PSAC mark. IUP's women's tennis team is 7-3 on the campaign with an unblemished PSAC record at 5-0. The Crimson Hawks are currently ranked second in the Atlantic Region rankings. The Mercyhurst women's team is also ranked in the Atlantic Region, being selected as the ninth best team as of the April 9 rankings. The Lakers currently hold a 5-6 record overall with a 4-2 mark in the PSAC. 

The men's team will take on conference rival and also Atlantic Region ranked Mercyhurst in a road contest slated to be played on Saturday, April 17 at 11:30 a.m. at Fairview Area High School. The men's team will get their third consecutive road test to help prepare for the PSAC Tournament. Edinboro currently ranks second in the Atlantic Region as of April 9, while Mercyhurst is currently ranked fifth in the latest rankings. Edinboro will be looking to pick up their ninth consecutive team victory with their current recrord sitting at 8-3 and 5-0 in PSAC play.

The men's team features a collection of players who have been playing strong in both singles and doubles competition throughout the season. Takahiro Inoue (Osaka, Japan/Yanagawa) has been playing most of the season at number one singles and has won six of his last single's matches overall. Ruben Acuna (Palam De Mallorca, Spain/Aula Balear) has primarily been the number two singles player and has won seven of his last eight singles matches. Thibault Dorval comes into the match with Mercyhurst a winner of eight straight matches at the number three spot for the Fighting Scots. 

Gustavo Martins (Sao Carlos, Brazil) has been a solid number four singles competitor for Edinboro this season. He has won 10 of his first 11 matches to begin the 2021 season. Kaio Sacchi (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Santo Ivo) has been victorious in singles action in his last eight matches and will put his win streak on the line against Mercyhurst. Rounding out the lineup is Kai Chin Chen (Tapei, Taiwan) who has won five of his last six singles matches overall for Edinboro.

In doubles, the duo of Dorval and Martins have won seven of their last eight doubles matches at the number two doubles position and will look to make it their third straight doubles victory this weekend. Sacchi has also been a reliable doubles player recently for the Fighting Scots. He has won five of his last six doubles matches playing alongside Acuna in some matches and Jorge Benette (Cerquilho, Brazil/Colegio Gradual Cerquilho) in others.
