Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro football team used a pair of
Keon Anderson touchdown runs including the game-winner in overtime to top visiting Bloomsburg 23-20 Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium.
In the extra period, Bloomsburg lost two yards on the opening possession, but Brendan McGonigle connected on a 37-yard field goal to give the Huskies a 20-17 advantage. Edinboro moved the ball with a pass interference call and a five-yard completion to
Thaddeus Standfield setting up a second and five from the 12-yard line. After a rush for no-gain,
Aaron Hopkins drew another pass interference call to move the ball to the Bloomsburg 2-yard line. Anderson took the two-yard plunge for his second touchdown and the game-winner.
"I really think that our experience from 2021 really helped us. We have a lot of guys that played quality minutes for us," said head coach
Jake Nulph. "We are finding a way to win and that is the most important thing. It wasn't pretty today, but when it came time to execute and make a play we did that."
Trailing 17-10, Edinboro's defense came up with the big play. On third and three from the Bloomsburg 19,
Allen Stritzinger intercepted KJ Riley at the 30 and returned it to the Huskie three. Two Anderson rushes later, the Scots tied the game at 17.
The Scots opened the scoring with 2:27 left in the first on a 22-yard field goal by
Richie Pekmezian.
Bloomsburg answered in the second, taking advantage of an interception to score on a one-play 25-yard touchdown strike from Riley to Matthew Bowes with 7:30 on the clock.
Edinboro took the lead back just before the half when
Isaac Bernard hit
Mike Watkins for a 38-yard score on fourth and seven to take a 10-7 advantage into the half.
Bloomsburg scored twice in the third quarter to take the lead back 17-10.
The defense ruled the day with 11 total turnovers. The Scots recovered two fumbles and intercepted Riley three times. Edinboro fumbled five times and had one pass intercepted.
Clay Cummingham made a game-high 14 tackles including six solo stops and 2.5 for a loss and a forced fumble.
Wilfredo Diaz made nine tackles, one sack and an interception.
Malcolm Johnson made three of his eight stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Anthony Mendicino also had a strong performance on defense, with seven tackles – one for a loss – and one interception.
Bernard finished 30-of-47 for 290 and a touchdown.
Nico Mrvos led the receivers with five catches for 74 yards. Anderson had a pair of rushing touchdowns.
The Scot defense held Riley to 9-of-23 passes for 125 yards. Kaleb Monaco rushed for a team-high 67 yards.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cal (Pa.). Kickoff is slated for noon.
