Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro football team dropped a 31-10 decision to visiting Cal Saturday afternoon in the PSAC West opener for both teams.
The Scots got on the board first. Edinboro took over at their own 27 after a Cal punt.
Brian Trobel carried twice for 26 yards moving the ball to the Vulcan 42. After a sack,
Isaac Bernard rushed for 11 and completed a pass to
Thaddeus Standfield for 11 yards and a roughing the passer call advanced the football to the Cal 14.
Reed Martin would cap the drive with a 28-yard field goal to give Edinboro a 3-0 lead.
The teams exchanged punts before capped a 14-play, 6:32 drive with a five yard touchdown pass from Davis Black to Eric Willis III from five yards out to take a 7-3 lead.
The Scots marched the ball down the field on the ensuing drive that started from their own five. A short completion to Standfield and a 10-yard run by Trobel moved the ball to the Edinboro 18. The Scots advanced the ball to their own 45 with two Bernard completions and a Vulcan holding call. Bernard connected with
Aaron Hopkins on a 31 yard pass to set the Scots up with a first and goal at the one, but the Vulcans forced a fumble and came up with the recovery to keep the score 7-3 at the break.
Cal extended their lead on the first drive of the third quarter covering 74 yards in nine plays finished off by a one-yard touchdown Eric McKan III to make it 14-3. Cal would score again before the end of the third on four-yard McKan plunge to push the advantage to 21-3.
The Vulcan lead grew to 31-3 before
Bo Swartz scored on a four-yard run to set the final at 38-10.
Hopkins led the Fighting Scot offense with four catches for 62 yards. Standfield finished with four catches for 40 yards. Trobel rushed nine times for 52 yards.
Black threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Vulcans. Omari Hopkins was his favorite target with six catches for 121 yards.
CJ Waldier led the Scots with 12 tackles, seven solo.
Tristian Waldier finished with 10 stops while
Ty Thornton made eight tackles with a sack.
The Scots are back in on Saturday when they host Mercyhurst at 2 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium in the annual homecoming game.
