Wrestling Drops MAC Dual to SIUE

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team fell 23-9 to visiting SIUE Friday night in dual meet action inside McComb Fieldhouse.

Davian Guanajuato scored a first period takedown of Caleb Edwards to take a 3-0 lead after one. Edwards escaped to start the second, but Guanajuato extended the lead to 6-1 with a late takedown. Guanajuato held a 13-3 advantage and looked to be heading for a major decision, but Edwards scored a takedown with 14 seconds left in the third to keep the Cougars to just three team points.

At 133, Marcel Lopez opened the scoring with a takedown of Lane Aikey. Aikey would escape to cut the first period deficit to 3-1. Lopez scored the only point of the second with an escape. Aikey was hit with three stall calls while on the bottom in the third before escaping late to set the final at 7-2.

Jacob Brenneman and Eric Almarinez wrestled a scoreless first. Almarinez picked up a point on Brenneman's second stall call and then scored a takedown to lead 4-0 after two. Almarinez escaped quickly in the third and picked up another stall point and the riding time point to take a 7-1 decision extending the SIUE lead to 9-0.

Colin Roberts opened the scoring at 149 on a technical violation by Caine Tyus and held that 1-0 lead after the first period. Tyus scored an escape to even the score and then took the lead on a stall call against Robert. Roberts would get the stall call back in the third, but Tyus was able to secure the riding time point and a 3-2 decision.

Brock Woodcock got off to a fast start against Steffan Lynch scoring a takedown and 10 near-fall points in the first period to go ahead 13-0. Woodcock scored two more near-fall points in the second for a 15-0 tech fall at 4:23.

Max Kirby got the Scots on the board at 165. Trailing 4-0 heading to the final period, Kirby escaped five seconds into the third and went on the offensive. He scored a takedown with 1:11 left to in the period to knot the score 4-4. Bradley Gillum scored an escape to take the lead, but Kirby notched a takedown with eight seconds left in the period to claim a 7-5 decision.

Joey Arnold came out of the gate fast for the Scots forcing a pair of stall warnings and getting the opening point just 1:02 into the match. He tallied a takedown with 1:43 remaining in the first to push his lead to 4-0. Dom Lopez scored an escape late in the period to cut the lead to 4-1. Lopez got out to start the second and scored a late takedown to take a 5-4 lead into the final period. Arnold tied the score with an escape and in a late scramble Lopez put his foot into Arnold's face and pushed away giving the Scot a penalty point and the 6-5 decision.

Brody Evans and Deron Pulliam wrestled a scoreless first. Pulliam scored an escape in the second to take a 1-0 advantage to the final frame. Evans tied the score with a quick escape in the third, but a penalty point for an illegal kickback put Evans behind 2-1. Pulliam scored two takedowns in the final 35 seconds to claim an 8-2 decision.

After a scoreless first, Jack Kilner scored a quick escape to grab a 1-0 lead for the Scots. He tallied a takedown and Ryan Yarnell notched an escape to make it 4-1 Kilner after two. The Fighting Scot kept Yarnell at bay after the Cougar decided to start the third on his feet giving Kilner a 4-1 decision.

The final bout of the night required sudden victory. Nick Lodato found himself trailing Bryson Buhk 4-0 late in the second after a takedown for Buhk left Lodato needing injury time. Buhk chose to go neutral out of the injury and Lodato trimmed the lead to 4-3 with a takedown with 12 seconds left in the second. Lodato would escape with 44 seconds left in the third to tie the match and force sudden victory. Buhk took home the 7-4 decision with a takedown with 20 seconds left in the extra period.
 
The Scots are back in action on Sunday at the Bobby Kauffman Open at McComb Fieldhouse. Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. and all proceeds go to the Bobby Kauffman Memorial Scholarship Endowment.
