Football Scores Homecoming Victory Over California (PA)

Edinboro, Pa. – Jeremiah Neeley hauled in the go-ahead touchdown with 1:38 remaining and the Edinboro defense made the lead stand up as the Scots scored a 35-29 victory over California (PA) Saturday afternoon inside Sox Harrison Stadium.
 
Harry Radcliffe gave Cal the lead with 3:21 to play with an 18-yard field goal capping off a 12-play 73 -yard drive that took 7:06 off the fourth quarter clock. The Scots began the ensuing drive from their own 25. Facing a second and 10 Nico Marchitelli hit Jaret Frantz for a 33-yard strike down the right sideline to move the ball to the Cal 42. Jerry Dinkins III ripped off a 24 yard run to push the ball to the Vulcan 18. After a pair of Dinkins runs and two Vulcan timeouts put the ball at the Cal 17. On third and nine, Marchitelli connected with Neely for a 17-yard strike down the right sideline. Frantz caught the 2-point conversion to extend the lead to 35-29 with 1:38 remaining.
 
Cal returned the kickoff to their own 35 and a six-yard completion moved the ball to 41. Phaeton Hill connected with D'Avay Johnson for eight more to advance the ball to the Vulcan 49. Carlos Morales sealed the win for the Fighting Scots intercepting Hill and allowing the offense to kneel on the ball and claim the win.
 
The Scots got off to a fast start taking the opening drive and marching it down the field covering 66 yards in 13 plays capped by a nine-yard Caron Robins touchdown. The two-point try was no good and Edinboro held a 6-0 lead.
 
Edinboro forced a punt on the next Cal possession and the offense went back to work. The Scots started the drive from their own 41 and converted a third and three to move the ball to the Vulcan 45. Marchitelli went over the top to Isaiah Grier for a 43-yard connection to the Cal 2-yard line. On second and goal Dinkins punched in the score to extend the lead to 12-0 with 3:36 left in the first.
 
Cal got on the board on the first play of the second quarter when Radcliffe hit a 27-yard field goal to cut the lead to 12-3. Edinboro answered with a 14-play 66-yard march that ended in a Tanner Bruzda 21-yard field goal with 8:30 showing in the second quarter pushing the lead to 15-3.
 
The Vulcans cut into the lead on a Kenny Lewis IV five-yard touchdown reception from Roman Purcell to make it 15-10 Scots at the 3:52 mark. Cal cashed in an Edinboro turnover for a Radcliffe 28-yard field goal as time expired in the half cutting the halftime score to 15-13 Edinboro.
 
On the first possession of the second half, Cal took their first lead of the game on a Jake Layhue 1-yard plunge finishing off a five-play 78-yard drive.
 
The Scots answered with a punishing 15-play 73-yard drive that ate up 8:57 of the third quarter covering 63 of those yards on the ground including a two-yard touchdown run from Dinkins to retake the lead 21-20 a lead they would take to the fourth quarter.
 
With 12:46 left in the fourth quarter Hill capped off an 11-play 75-yard drive with four-yard touchdown run giving Cal a 26-21 lead. The two-point conversion failed.
 
Edinboro wasted no time taking back the lead. The Scot drive started at their own 21. Marchitelli hit Junior Aderomilehin for five yards and Caron Robinson picked up a first down with a six-yard run up the middle. Marchitelli hit Frantz with a fade for 21 yards to move the ball to Vulcan 47. Robinson burst through the middle and galloped 47 yards and a touchdown pushing the lead to 27-26 with 10:34 left in the game.
 
The Vulcans answered once again advancing the ball to the Edinboro 1-yard line but Layhue was stopped on third and goal from the one by Nick Rossi and JT Taylor to force an 18-yard Radcliffe field goal setting up the Scots game-winning drive.

Edinboro snapped a 19-game losing streak against the Vulcans running their overall record to 3-3 and their PSAC West mark to 2-1.
 
The Scots used the ground game rushing for 230 yards and four touchdowns. Robinson led the way with 121 yards and two scores on just 10 carries. Dinkins added 96 yards and two scores on 19 carries. Marchitelli was 18-of-29 for 240 yards and a touchdown. He spread the ball to eight different receivers. Neeley caught four passes for 57 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Aderomilehin hauled in six passes for 42 yards and Frantz caught three for 68 yards.
 
Kamar Meza led the Scots with eight tackles. Morales added six stops one for a loss in addition to his interception. Nick Penucci also tallied six stops. 
 
The Scots step out of PSAC West play next week when they host Fairmont State at noon inside Sox Harrison Stadium.
