Greensburg, Pa. – The Edinboro defense stifled host Seton Hill while also scoring a touchdown as the Fighting Scots earned a 22-6 road victory over the Griffins Saturday afternoon inside Offutt Stadium.
The game started as a defensive struggle with Edinboro opening the game with ball and punting after one first down. The Scot defense forced a three-and-out, but the offense was pinned deep again and forced to punt the ball back to the Griffins.
Seton Hill started their second drive at their own 48 and moved the ball to the Edinboro 34-yard line where they faced a fourth and six. Boden St. Marie hit Jayden Llanos for a first down, but
Nate Deanes put his helmet on the football forcing a fumble that
Montrice Webster recovered at the Edinboro 23 to give the Scots the ball back.
The teams traded punts deep into the second quarter when the Griffins drove the ball to the Edinboro 26. The Scot defense forced a fourth and 13 from the 29 and forced an incompletion to stop the drive with 5:09 left in the second quarter.
Caron Robinson toted the rock on the first five plays of the drive moving the ball across midfield to the Seton Hill 37-yard line. On the ensuing play,
Nico Marchitelli pulled the ball on the read and bounced outside and off a tackle going 37 yards for the touchdown giving Edinboro a 7-0 lead with 1:54 left in the first half. The Scots would take that led into the locker room.
Seton Hill started the second half with the football and a pair of Griffin penalties derailed the drive and forced a punt. The punt was only 29 yards setting the Edinboro offense up at the plus 48 for their first drive of the second half. It was another steady diet of Robinson. After gains of four and seven to earn a first down at the Griffin 37, he broke off a 26 yarder down to the 11-yard line. He carried twice more punching in the touchdown from four yards out to push the lead to 14-0 with 10:00 minutes on the clock in the third.
That score held into the fourth quarter when Seton Hill threatened with a first and 10 from the Edinboro 29. After an incomplete pass, Boden St. Marie fumbled at the Scot 33 and the ball hopped to Deanes who scooped the ball and returned it 70 yards for the touchdown. Bo Swatz converted the two-point attempt to extend the lead to 22-0.
The Griffins got on the board with 9:14 to play when Darrian Carter hit Julian Jordan for a 63-yard touchdown. Seton Hill missed the extra point making the score 22-6.
The Scot defense made the lead stand up pushing Edinboro's record to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in PSAC West play.
The Scot defense forced five Griffin fumbles and recovered four of them. Edinboro also made nine tackles for loss including three sacks. Deanes notched nine stops, 2.0 tackles for loss, forced a fumble and returned another for a touchdown.
Nick Pennucci made seven stops with 1.0 for a loss and one forced fumble.
Robinson carried the ball 21 times for 125 yards and a touchdown, his second 100-yard game of the season. Marchitelli was 6-for-14 for 19 yards and he rushed eight times for 16 yards and a touchdown.
The Griffin quarterback duo of St. Marie and Carter were 19-of-36 for 238 and a touchdown. The Scots limited Ky'Ron Craggette to 69 yards on 17 carries. Llanos led the receiving corps with six catches for 64 yards.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock at noon inside Sox Harrison Stadium for Senior Day.
