Softball Drops Pair of Games in Charleston

Charleston, W.Va. – The Edinboro softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of action in Charleston on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Scots fell 16-1 to host Charleston in the opener before dropping a 10-2 decision to Concord in the nightcap.
 
In the opener, Edinboro manufactured a run in the top of the first inning. Adeline Maguire was hit by a pitch  before stealing second and third. Lucy Higley drew a walk to put runners on the corners. The Scots successfully pulled off the double steal bringing Maguire to plate and taking a 1-0 lead.
 
The Golden Eagles answered in the bottom of the second scoring eight runs on six hits and taking advantage of one Edinboro error to take an 8-1 lead.
 
The teams played two more scoreless innings before Charleston put up another eight spot in the fourth using five hits and three Scot errors to extend the lead to 16-1. Edinboro went down in order in the top of the fifth ending the game.
 
Emalie Thomas and Isabelle Bavaro each had a hit for the Scots. Grace Kessel took the loss in the circle allowing six runs, three earned in 1.2 innings of work.
 
Against Concord, the Mountain Lions scored first in the bottom of the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. Edinboro got the run right back in the top of the second. Higley singled up the middle and stole second before moving to third on a passed ball. Isabella Becker hit a ball to short an reached on the error and scoring Higley from third.
A solo home run in the bottom of the third gave Concord back the lead. The Mountain Lions plated four in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1.
 
Cassidy Weller belted a solo shot of her own in the top of the sixth to pull the Scots within 6-2, but Concord scored four in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the 8-run rule.
 
In addition to Weller and Higley, Abigail Olejniczak picked up a hit for the Scots. Giana Ficcaglia took the loss in the circle going 4.0 innings allowing six runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
The Scots return to action at the Spring Games in Florida beginning on March 6.
